“…This finding, associated with the lack of change in the reported rate of abortions in relation to 1993, suggests the use of effective birth control methods over this period. Indeed, population-based studies including women aged 15-49 years carried out in Pelotas have shown that the prevalence of the use of any birth control method was higher than that found in Brazil as a whole, with the pill and female sterilization being the methods most frequently reported 15,16,17 . Although the global rate of abortions has remained stable over the last eleven years, there was an increase among mothers in the 3.1-6 and > 10 times minimum wage brackets, among whom the highest decrease in parity was also observed.…”

“…Correa et al 11 used data from a 2008 telephone landline survey of a population sample of women aged from 18 to 49 years who were living in the capitals of the 26 Brazilian states and in the Federal District and found that the prevalence of contraindicated use of oral contraceptives among these women was 12%. Furthermore, studies carried out in 1992 and 1999, using representative population-based samples of women aged between 20 and 49 years who were living in Pelotas found that, among users of contraceptive methods, 12.4% and 12.5% use contraindicated oral contraceptives, respectively 24 , 25 . These prevalences may have been due to the fact that those studies only evaluated a few contraindications (hypertension, smokers aged 35 years or over, diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular disease).…”

“…Outros estudos realizados no Sudeste do País também mostram menor prevalência, embora muitos utilizem populações de menor nível socioeconô-mico 4,9 . O uso de métodos contraceptivos obtidos no presente estudo foi similar a resultados encontrados em outro estudo realizado em Pelotas, no ano de 1992 5 . A pílula e a esterilização como mé-todos mais prevalentes têm sido apontado em vários estudos 1, 2, 4, 5, 17 .…”
