Herein the use of medicinal plants by the population of the 3rd Sanitary District of Maceió-AL city is reported. Transversal description was conducted from February 2013 to January 2014, with a sample of 116 individuals of both Gender Genders aged over 18 years. The ethnobotanical information interviews ethnobotanical information were obtained through semi -structured questionnaire featuring the use of medicinal plants and social and economical data. Descriptive statistics was applied for quantitative variables as mean and standard deviation and proportions for qualitative variables in the frequency table format. The results showed that 85.34% of the interviewees used plants for medicinal purposes. As the majority of these were (73.28%) females in the age group between 30-60 years of old. Among a total of 45 identified plant species, the highest use frequency were for Boldus Peumus (bilberry), Melissa officinalis (lemon balm), and Mentha piperita (mint). The most widely used plant foliage part was (53.53%) prepared as an infusion (55.5%). The use of medicinal plants in Maceió cityis widespread, highlighting the importance of ethnobotanical knowledge for the study of medicinal plants.Keywords: medicinal plants, ethnobotanical, herbal medicine. Perfil de plantas medicinais utilizadas pela população do 3º DistritoSanitário de Maceió-AL ResumoO presente estudo teve como objetivo analisar o perfil de utilização de plantas medicinais dos indivíduos residentes no 3º Distrito Sanitário do município de Maceió, Alagoas. Trata-se de um estudo observacional, descritivo de caráter transversal que foi realizado no período de fevereiro de 2013 a janeiro de 2014, com amostra de 116 indivíduos, maiores de 18 anos de ambos os gêneros. As informações etnobotânicas foram obtidas através de entrevistas semi-estruturadas realizadas por meio de questionário semiestruturado para traçar o perfil de utilização de plantas medicinais e dados socioeconômicos e demográficos dos entrevistados. A estatística descritiva foi aplicada para as variáveis quantitativas na forma de média e desvio padrão e proporções para variáveis qualitativas no formato de tabelas de frequência. Os resultados evidenciaram que 85,34% dos entrevistados utilizavam plantas para finalidades medicinais. Sendo a maioria destes, (73,28%) do Gênero feminino estando na faixa etária de 30 a 60 anos de idade. De um total de 45 espécies vegetais identificadas, as de maior frequência de utilização foram o Peumus boldus (boldo), a Melissa officinalis (erva-cidreira) e a Menta piperita (hortelã). A parte mais utilizada das plantas foi às folhas (53,53%) sendo ainda esta preparada sob forma de infusão (55,5%). A utilização de plantas medicinais no município de Maceió, Alagoas é bastante difundida, reforçando a importância de estudos etnobotânicos a fim de trabalhar com o resgate do conhecimento popular aliado a literatura científica.Palavras-chave: plantas medicinais, etnobotância, fitoterapia.

OJECTIVEThis study seeks to identify practices of self-medication in the treatment of ocular emergencies. We examine patients’ use of both homemade preparations and manufactured products before seeking specialized care.MATERIALS AND METHODSWe conducted a cross-sectional analytic survey of consecutive patients seen in the ophthalmology emergency room of a teaching hospital.RESULTSThe sample included 561 subjects, 51.3% males and 48.7% females, with a mean age of 39.8 years. Prior to seeking emergency care, 40.5% reported self-medicating; 29.4% used a homemade preparation (13.9% referred to an industrialized product like boric acid as a homemade preparation), and 11.1% used a manufactured product. The most frequently used products included a boric acid solution (53.3%), a normal saline solution (35.7%), herbal infusions (6.1%) and breast milk (4.8%). Viral conjunctivitis was the most frequent diagnosis (24.4%), followed by the presence of a corneal foreign body (7.4%). No significant differences were found in the self-treatment of ocular injuries according to gender (p = 0.95), level of education (p = 0.21) or age (p = 0.14). In addition, self-medication practices were not related to the medically judged severity of the condition.CONCLUSIONPatients often attempt to treat conditions that require ophthalmologic emergency care by self-medicating with homemade or manufactured products. The most widely used products include boric acid, normal saline, leaf infusions and breast milk. This behavior occurs independently of educational level, gender, age or the nature of the ocular condition. Self-medication is a culturally driven practice that is used even in cases of acute ocular injuries.

The use of a popular Fitotherapy was studied among 782 families m the district o f Campina Grande in the state o f Paraíba The study was of a "descriptive survey" kind and the technique used was an interview applied on home visits. A data assessment instrument containing open and closed questions was used as an instrument o f data collection. lt was revealed that 82,9% of the studied families had a "specialist" in "medicinal plants" who used to prepare different kinds of medicines. lt was also observed that most of them were females (93,7%) aging from 15 to 44 (47,3%), 85,0% were catholics and the majority had learned to use the plants with their own families. The medicinal plants used the most were: Lippia alba (443), Cymbopogon citratus (3 34), Sambucus australis (313), Chenopodium ambrosíoides (231), Punica granatum (231), and Peumus boldus (215), Ruta graveolens (198) and Mentha x villosa (181)The main health problems treated by "the specialists" using the plants were, gastro-intestinal (21, 1%), throat, no se and lungs (18,2%), fever and cold (13,3%), psychoneurologicals (8,3%), cardiacs and circulatories (6,5%), female genitais (6,4%) and buccal (4,3%) problems. It was shown that those medicines were usually prepared as a tea (infusion or deccoto) (63,4%) made from fresh leaves (55,0%) for the "specialists",himself, and family use in general. lt was also observed that prescription complied with those of scientifical literature indicated and that most plants were taken from the backyards of the v "specialisfs house" or the neighborhood (54,5%). A great number of specialists (57,0%) noted that they had not found any toxical plant in those places. The author showed the importance of the use of Fitotherapy to be used not only the public health services but also the need of the University to participate in the process as well as the community services teaching and cooperating with research activities.
