ResumoO objetivo deste estudo foi estimar a correlação entre o perímetro scrotal (PE) e a idade de touros Aberdeen Angus. Os dados relativos aos PE de 248 touros foram obtidos a partir de um banco de dados de exames andrológicos pertencentes a Embryo Inc., Turlock, Califórnia, Estados Unidos AbstractThe objective of this study was to estimate a correlation between the scrotal circumference (SC) and age of Aberdeen Angus bulls. Data regarding SC from 248 bulls were obtained from a database on andrologic evaluations belonging to Embryo Inc. Turlock, California, United States, between 2006 and 2011. Bulls were raised in semi-intensive system in the region of the San Joaquim valley. The mean age was 15.4 (± 1.5) months and mean SC was 36.8 (± 2.9) cm. For the statistical analysis, Pearson linear correlation was used with minimum level of significance. The correlation between age and SC was positive (0.317) indicating an existence of other factors influencing the SC size

The aim of this research was to evaluate pubertal development characteristics of Crioulo Lageano breed bulls (n = 10) using morphometric measurements and semen analysis, to identify factors that can be used to estimate age at puberty in this locally adapted breed. Monthly measurement of body weight and fortnightly measurement of scrotal circumference, chest girth, testicular length, width, thickness, and volume were recorded for each of the 10 Crioulo Lageano breed bulls, which were between 10 and 20 months old. During this period, semen samples were collected every two weeks using electroejaculation method and analyzed physically and morphologically. The ages of the appearance of first spermatozoa in the ejaculate (FSE), the first motile spermatozoa in the ejaculate (FSEM), seminal puberty (PUB) and total detachment between glans penis and prepuce (DPP) were ascertained. Crioulo Lageano bulls reached puberty at 14.1 ± 2.0 months old with lower weight and larger testicles than those of other bovine breeds. Similarly, the period from FSEM to PUB was shorter and the period from FSE to FSEM was longer than those reported for other breeds. The most important characteristics studied in order to estimate puberty age in Crioulo Lageano bulls were the measures of testicular length, width, and volume. These parameters can be used as criteria to select young bulls as sires.

-The objective of this study was to determine the main causes of failure in bull breeding using a soundness evaluation in Rio Grande do Sul State/Brazil. We evaluated 19,836 bulls from 15 different breeds with ages ranging from two to eight years. The failures of bulls in each step were analyzed by logistic regression. The binary logistic regression was applied because the response variable had only two responses: Success (1) and Failure (0). Older bulls are more likely to be rejected than are younger bulls, regardless of their genetic group. Depending on the step of the assessment, one or another group is rejected. All steps of bull breeding soundness evaluation (BBSE) are important, with special attention to the failures of the behavioral evaluation (libido and physical ability). A BBSE performed before the breeding season reduces the risk of sub-fertile bulls in the herd.
