-The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of egg yolk and seminal plasma on the viability of cryopreserved goat semen. To this end, four fertile Saanen bucks, aged between 10 months and 1 year, and weighing 18 to 25 kg, were used. Semen was collected from each buck by the artificial vagina method at the end of breeding season (JuneJuly). The extender used was the yolk citrate, which was split into two equal aliquots: 5% egg yolk (2.5 mL egg yolk: 47.5 mL citrate solution) were added to one of the samples and 10% egg yolk (5.0 mL egg yolk: 45.0 mL citrate solution) were added to another. The sperm motility and vigor after thawing and post thermal resistance test (TRT) were evaluated and the data were subjected to analysis of variance and means were compared by the F test at 5.0% probability. The observed values for motility and vigor after thawing and post thermal resistance test (TRT), fast and slow, according to the presence of seminal plasma and egg yolk percentage were: 5% egg yolk with plasma (25.0% and 3.3; 1.60% and 0.7; 12.36% and 1.6, respectively); 5% egg yolk without plasma (23.61% and 3.1; 1.25% and 0.2; 9.93% and 1.3, respectively); 10% egg yolk with plasma (30.8% and 3.3; 4.4% and 1.9; 19.5% and 2.7, respectively); and 10% egg yolk without plasma (13.4% and 2.5; 4.1% and 0.5; 17.0% and 1.0, respectively). There were significant differences between the analyzed data in relation to semen with or without plasma at different percentages of egg yolk, and the group that presented the best results was 10% egg yolk citrate in extender with plasma. The presence of seminal plasma and higher concentration of egg yolk in extender provide a higher viability of cryopreserved goat semen.

An artificial insemination (AI) program using cooled semen was evaluated over a 7-year period in Florida goats. The effect of the following variables on pregnancy rates was analysed: production system, year and season of AI, synchronisation treatment, bucks, AI technicians, semen deposition site, days in milk at AI, milk yield and parity. Animals were reared under field conditions on commercial farms in southern Spain. Semen was collected from nine bucks and cooled at 4°C until use. A total of 3,941 goats were synchronised using intravaginal progesterone sponges and inseminated 46.0 ± 0.5 h. after sponge removal. Pregnancy was diagnosed by ultrasonography 42-46 days after AI, obtaining an average pregnancy rate of 48.7%. Logistic regression showed that production system, AI year and season, bucks and semen deposition site had a significant effect (p < 0.05) on pregnancy rate, while the other variables analysed were removed from the model. The final statistical model accounted for 59.7% of the cases analysed, suggesting that other factors not studied here may influence pregnancy rates in Florida goats.Additional key words: buck; fertility; fresh semen; goat; pregnancy. Resumen Factores que influyen en el éxito de un programa de inseminación artificial en cabras de raza FloridaSe analizaron los resultados obtenidos en un programa de inseminación artificial (IA) con semen refrigerado en cabra Florida, correspondientes a 7 años, en los que se analizó el efecto de numerosas variables (sistemas de producción, año y estación de IA, tratamientos de sincronización, machos utilizados, inseminadores, lugar de deposición del semen, días en lactación, producción de leche y número de partos) sobre la tasa de gestación. Las cabras se encontraban en granjas comerciales del sur de España y el trabajo se desarrolló en condiciones de campo. El semen fue recogido en nueve machos y seguidamente refrigerado a 4°C hasta su uso. Un total de 3.941 cabras fueron sincronizadas con esponjas intravaginales impregnadas con progestágenos y se inseminaron 46,0 ± 0,5 h. tras su retirada. El diagnóstico de gestación se realizó mediante ecografía a los 42-46 días tras la IA, obteniendo una tasa media del 48,7%. La regresión logística utilizada en el análisis estadístico de los datos identificó que las variables sistemas de producción, año y estación de IA, machos utilizados y lugar de deposición del semen afectaban significativamente (p < 0,05) la tasa de gestación, mientras que las restantes variables fueron eliminadas del modelo. El 59,7% de los casos analizados fueron adecuadamente explicados según el modelo estadístico final obtenido, sugiriendo que otros factores no considerados en este estudio afectan de manera importante sobre la tasa de gestación en programas de IA en la raza Florida.

-The objective of this study was to compare the effect of hormonal treatment duration through the use of intravaginal sponges impregnated with 60 mg MAP for 6 (G6; n = 10), 9 (G9; n = 10) or 12 (G12; n = 10) days. All nulliparous (n = 15) and lactating (n = 15) Saanen goats received 37.5 µg d-cloprostenol and 200 IU eCG 24 hours before sponge removal during the nonbreeding season. After sponge removal, estrus was monitored twice a day (06h00 and 18h00) by the use of fertile bucks. Transrectal ovarian ultrasonography was performed after device removal until ovulation detection. All goats were bred by artificial insemination (AI) or natural breeding (NB). All females received 250 IU hCG 5 d after AI or NB. No difference was observed among groups G6, G9 and G12 for: estrous response (90.0, 100.0 and 100.0%, respectively); interval from sponge removal to estrus (26.7±5.6, 25.2±2.8 and 25.2±3.3 hours), duration of estrus (28.5±7.1; 21.6±3.0 and 25.2±6.1 hours); ovulation rate (80.0, 100.0 and 70.0%); number of ovulations (1.9±0.2, 1.5±0.2 and 1.4±0.2); and pregnancy rate (60.0, 80.0 and 50.0%). Interval from sponge removal to ovulation was shorter in animals from G6 (44.6±2.2 hours) than for animals from G9 (52.8±2.7 hours) and G12 (60.0±4.5 hours). All treatments were effective in the induction of synchronized estrus in Saanen goats during the nonbreeding season, but ovulation occurred earlier when goats received sponges for 6 days.
