ABSTRACT. Seed germination and dormancy are complex phenomena that are controlled by many genes and environmental factors. Such genes are indicated by phytohormones that interact with each other, and may cause dormancy or promote seed germination. The objective of this study was to investigate gene expression associated with the biosynthetic pathways of abscisic acid (ABA), gibberellic acid (GA), and ethylene (ET) in dormant and germinated lettuce seeds. The expressions of LsNCED, LsGA3ox1, and ACO-B were evaluated in germinating and dormant seeds from the cultivars Everglades, Babá de Verão, Verônica, Salinas, Colorado, and Regina 71. The expressions of LsNCED, LsGA3ox1, and ACO-B were related to the biosynthesis of ABA, GA, and ET, respectively; therefore, the presence of these substances depends on genotype. LsNCED expression only occurred in dormant seeds, and was connected to dormancy. LsGA3ox1expression only occurred in germinated seeds, and was connected to germination. The ACO-B gene was involved in ET biosynthesis, and was expressed differently in germinated and dormant seeds, depending on the genotype, indicating different functions for different characteristics. Furthermore, sensitivity to phytohormones appeared to be more important than the expression levels of LsNCED, LsGA3ox1, or ACO-B.

ResumoO nematoide das galhas tem prejudicado a produção comercial de alface em condições de elevadas temperaturas. A utilização de cultivares resistentes é uma alternativa para o cultivo nessas condições. O presente trabalho teve por objetivo verificar a resistência ao nematoide das galhas Meloigogyne incógnita raça 1 em 17 famílias F 2:3 de alface de folhas lisas. O delineamento experimental foi de blocos casualizados, com 17 tratamentos e quatro repetições. Cada planta foi avaliada individualmente e recebeu nota de um a cinco conforme a menor ou a maior incidência de galhas nas raízes. Os valores obtidos para cada família foram comparados com aqueles obtidos para as cultivares Grand Rapids e Regina 71, mediante teste c 2 . Seis famílias foram caracterizadas como homozigotas resistentes ao nematoide Meloidogyne incognita raça 1 porque não diferiram da cultivar Grand Rapids. As outras onze famílias foram caracterizadas como segregantes para o caráter porque não diferiram significativamente das testemunhas. A classificação de seis famílias como homozigotas resistentes indica a possibilidade de obter novas linhagens de alface de folhas lisas resistentes ao Meloidogyne incognita raça 1. Tais linhagens poderão ser utilizadas em programas de melhoramento ou originar novas cultivares comerciais herdeiras dessa característica.Palavras-chave: Lactuca sativa L. Melhoramento. Seleção. Vegetation Indices for Predicting the Growth and Harvest Rate of Lettuce

Urbanization has provided greater demand for food, and the search for strategies capable of reducing waste is essential to ensure food security. Lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) culture has a short life cycle and its harvest point is determined visually, causing waste and important losses. Using vegetation indices could be an important alternative to reduce errors during harvest definition. The objective of this study was to evaluate different vegetation indices to predict the growth rate and harvest point of lettuce. Twenty-five genotypes of biofortified green lettuce were evaluated. The Green Leaf Index (GLI), Normalized Green Red Difference Index (NGRDI), Spectral Slope Saturation Index (SI), and Overall Hue Index (HUE) were calculated from images captured at 1, 8, 18, 24, and 36 days after transplanting (vegetative state). The diameter and average leaf area of plants were measured using QGIS software. Green mass, number of leaves, and plant and stem diameter were measured in the field. The means were compared using the Scott–Knott test (p ≤ 0.05) and simple linear regression models were generated to monitor the growth rate, obtaining R2 values ranging from 62% to 99%. Genetic dissimilarity was confirmed by the multivariate analysis presenting a cophenetic correlation coefficient of 88.49%. Furthermore, validation between data collected in the field versus data obtained by imaging was performed using Pearson’s correlations and showed moderate to high values. Overall, the vegetation indices SI, GLI, and NGRDI were efficient for monitoring the growth rate and determining the harvest point of different green lettuce genotypes, in attempts to reduce waste and losses. It is suggested that the definition of the harvest point based on vegetation indices are specific for each genotype.
