Show more

“…On the other hand, physical factors, such as leaf color, must also be taken into account regarding host selection. The presence of undesirable volatile compounds in the Arlika squash variety was suggested to be the main cause for low attractiveness to whitefly Trialeurodes vaporariorum (Alves et al 2005(Alves et al , 2006. The presence of glandular trichomes is considered one of the main causes of leaf morphological resistance and may compromise oviposition and feeding by small sucking insects (Sippell et al 1987;Heinz and Zalom 1995;McAuslane 1996).…”

“…Concerning oviposition on the upper leaves, the means did not show statistical difference between varieties. Alves et al (2006) compared different squash varieties and found the lowest oviposition of T. vaporariorum on Sandy compared to Tetsukabuto (C. maxima 9 C. moschata); however, different parts of the plants were not evaluated.…”

“…Pumpkin plants (Cucurbita spp.) transplanted later in an adjacent area were also infested by the whitefl y, and more than 100 adults were observed per leaf in some hybrids, indicating differences in attractiveness, as demonstrated by Alves et al (2006). Among the invasive plants in that area, sow thistle (Sonchus oleraceus L.) was the most infested, with eggs, nymphs, and adults covering the lower surface of the leaves.…”
