Competitive Ability of Lettuce with Ryegrass1

-The objective of the study was to evaluate the competitive ability of summer crisp and butterhead lettuce types in coexistence with populations of ryegrass. The experimental design was completely randomized in a factorial 2 x 7 scheme, with four replications. On the A factor the lettuce types (summer crisp and butterhead) were allocated and, on B, the densities of ryegrass (0, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32 and 64 plants per pot). The number of leaves, chlorophyll content, leaf area, green mass and dry mass of the lettuce types and ryegrass were evaluated, and the diameter of the culture stem and the tiller number of the weed were determined. Differences in competitive ability between the lettuce types in competition with ryegrass were found, and butterhead was the most competitive when compared with summer crisp for all variables studied. There was an average loss of leaf area in lettuce types of up to 80% when it competed with ryegrass in the populations involved. Ryegrass is a very competitive weed to infect lettuce, and its handling is necessary, even at low densities to avoid productivity losses. -The objective of this research was to evaluate combinations of cultivars of coriander and arugula in two croppings with cultivars of carrot in a strip-intercropping system. The study was conducted from November 2014 to March 2015. The experimental design was a randomized complete block in a 2 x 2 x 2 + 2 factorial scheme, with four replications. The treatments consisted of the combination of two cultivars of coriander (Verdão and Português) with two cultivars of carrot (Brasília and Esplanada) and two cultivars of arugula (Cultivada and Folha Larga) in a strip-intercropping system plus two additional treatments, where the first represents the cultivars in monocropping and the second the cultivation types (monocropping and intercropping). The characteristics evaluated in the coriander and arugula were green mass yield and shoot dry mass. The following were evaluated in carrot: shoot dry mass, dry mass of roots, total and commercial productivity, and classified productivity of roots. In the intercropping system, the agronomic indices of land equivalent ratio, productive efficiency index, and score of the canonical variable were evaluated. The economic efficiency indicators determined were gross and net income, rate of return, profit margin, monetary advantage, and modified monetary advantage. There was no significant interaction among the cultivars of coriander, carrot, and arugula for coriander and arugula green mass yields, and for total and commercial productivities of carrot roots. The best polyculture was of that involved in the cultivars -Português,‖ -Esplanada,‖ and -Cultivada‖. O experimento foi realizado de junho a setembro de 2003, em campo da ESAM, com o objetivo de avaliar a qualidade de raízes de cenoura (Brasília) em sistemas consorciados com alface (Tainá) sob diferentes densidades populacionais. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi de blocos casualizados, em esquema fatorial 4 x 4, com três repetições. Os tratamentos foram resultantes da combinação de quatro populações de cenoura [(40%, 60%, 80% e 100% da população recomendada no cultivo solteiro (PRCS)] com quatro populações de alface (40%, 60%, 80% e 100% da PRCS). As características avaliadas nas raízes da cenoura foram acidez total titulável (ATT), sólidos solúveis totais (SST), açúcares totais (ACT) pH, relação sólidos solúveis totais e acidez total titulável, além da produtividade comercial da cenoura e da alface. Ocorreu interação significativa entre as densidades populacionais das culturas componentes na ATT das raízes da cenoura. Houve aumento no conteúdo de SST e no pH à medida que se aumentou a densidade populacional de cenoura. Houve também um aumento na produtividade comercial de raízes de cenoura e na produtividade da alface com o aumento de suas densidades populacionais, respectivamente. A variação na população de cenoura não afetou a produtividade da alface, mas a variação na população da alface afetou negativamente a produtividade comercial da cenoura. Entre as características avaliadas, as que se correlacionaram de maneira significativa com a produtividade comercial de cenoura, foram as concentrações de sólidos solúveis totais e açucares totais, evidenciando assim, que estes atributos podem ser considerados representativos da qualidade de raízes da cenoura.
