The purpose of treating seeds chemically is to eradicate their pathogens and/or protect them against soil pathogens, mainly by germination time. However, there is little research on vegetables investigating the effect of this treatment on seed quality. Therefore, this study evaluates the effects of Carboxin + Thiram doses on germination and vigor of three lots of broccoli seeds, as well as on the incidence of fungi in treated seed. The 15 treatments were evaluated in a factorial system (3x5), with the first factor consisting of three lots of 'Avenger' broccoli seeds (lots 82744, 82745 and 82749), and the second factor consisting of five doses (0, 0.04, 0.06, 0.10 and 0.12% of a.i.) of Carboxin + Thiram fungicide (commercial name Vitavax-Thiran). The germination and seed vigor were evaluated, in addition to the presence of pathogens in seeds after treatment (blotter test). All lots showed high levels of germination and vigor. The lot 82749, however, showed higher value in plug test in substrate emergence (99%) than lot 82745 (95%). Regarding the treatment with Carboxin + Thiram, no changes in germination average (98%) and vigor were noticed (average for the first germination count, length, and dry weight of seedling, plug test at 10 days after sowing of 97%, 4.9 cm, 4.0 mg and 96%, respectively), showing that this fungicide, in the evaluated doses, does not affect the quality of broccoli seeds. As to seeds health, the pathogens Alternaria spp. and Fusarium spp. were detected, in addition to saprophytic species such as Penicillium, Aspergillus, Trichoderma, and Rhizopus. The higher incidence of Fusarium spp. was noticed in lot 82744, and the lowest in lot 82749. As to Penicillium spp., lot 82479 was the most contaminated. Regarding other fungi, the general incidence was very low and there was no difference between lots and doses used.

Abstract:The changes of kernel nutritive components and seed vigor in F 1 seeds of sh 2 sweet corn during seed development stage were investigated and the relationships between them were analyzed by time series regression (TSR) analysis. The results show that total soluble sugar and reducing sugar contents gradually declined, while starch and soluble protein contents increased throughout the seed development stages. Germination percentage, energy of germination, germination index and vigor index gradually increased along with seed development and reached the highest levels at 38 d after pollination (DAP). The TSR showed that, during 14 to 42 DAP, total soluble sugar content was independent of the vigor parameters determined in present experiment, while the reducing sugar content had a significant effect on seed vigor. TSR equations between seed reducing sugar and seed vigor were also developed. There were negative correlations between the seed reducing sugar content and the germination percentage, energy of germination, germination index and vigor index, respectively. It is suggested that the seed germination, energy of germination, germination index and vigor index could be predicted by the content of reducing sugar in sweet corn seeds during seed development stages.

As relações entre os resultados de testes de germinação e de vigor, obtidos em laboratório, com a emergência de plântulas em campo têm sido bem documentadas na literatura. No entanto, essa situação não se verifica quanto às informações sobre os efeitos do vigor das sementes sobre o desenvolvimento e produção das plantas. Esta pesquisa procurou avaliar a influência do vigor de diferentes lotes de sementes de rabanete, cultivares Gigante Siculo e Cometa, sobre o comportamento das plantas em campo. Primeiramente, o potencial fisiológico das sementes foi avaliado mediante a condução de testes de germinação (velocidade e porcentagem), envelhecimento acelerado com solução saturada de NaCl, deterioração controlada, condutividade elétrica e emergência de plântulas. O experimento de campo foi instalado mediante a semeadura direta, ajustando-se o estande inicial para 20 plantas por metro linear, com base na porcentagem de germinação de cada lote. As práticas culturais foram efetuadas de acordo com as recomendações para a cultura do rabanete. A emergência de plântulas foi determinada aos 11 dias após a semeadura; nesta época e aos 18, 23 e 30 dias avaliaram-se a altura, o número de folhas e a massa da matéria seca da raiz e da parte aérea. A colheita foi efetuada aos 30 dias, avaliando-se a produção de raízes (t.ha-1). Os resultados obtidos para ambas as cultivares permitiram concluir que o vigor das sementes pode se relacionar com o desenvolvimento inicial das plantas, mas os efeitos não se manifestam sobre a produção final.
