Tomates longa vida: O que são, como foram desenvolvidos?

Abstract

E m função do grande número de consultas que temos recebido questionando-nos sobre a origem dos tomates longa vida atualmente comercializados no Brasil, entendemos que é bastante oportuno prestar à sociedade alguns esclarecimentos que possibilitem um melhor entendimento sobre o assunto.A produção de tomates para o consumo "in natura" no Brasil sofreu grandes transformações tecnológicas, nesta última década. Dentre elas, a utilização de sementes híbridas de cultivares que produzem frutos do tipo longa vida (cultivares do tipo longa vida) foi sem dú-vida uma das mais importantes.O fruto de tomate das cultivares tradicionais possui uma curta vida pós-colheita. Ao contrário, o fruto das cultivares do tipo longa vida possui uma vida RESUMOA produção de tomates para o consumo in natura no Brasil sofreu grandes transformações tecnológicas nesta última década. Dentre elas, a utilização de sementes híbridas de cultivares que produzem frutos do tipo longa vida (cultivares do tipo longa vida) foi, sem dúvida, uma das mais importantes. A expressão "tomates longa vida" tem sido utilizada no Brasil para descrever a característica de maior conservação pós-colheita dos frutos produzidos por algumas cultivares específicas de tomateiro (cultivares tipo longa vida). Cultivares de tomateiro do tipo longa vida podem ser obtidas por meio da seleção de alelos favoráveis para uma maior firmeza do pericarpo, pela utilização de mutantes de amadurecimento (rin, nor e alc) e por meio de técnicas da moderna biotecnologia celular. As primeiras são conhecidas como longa vida estruturais, as segundas como longa vida rin, nor ou alc, e as terceiras como longa vida transgênicas. Cultivares de tomateiro do tipo longa vida foram introduzidas comercialmente no Brasil pela primeira vez pela Agroflora em 1988 (longa vida estruturais) e em 1992 (longa vida rin). Não existem atualmente cultivares de tomateiro do tipo longa vida transgênicas sendo comercializadas no Brasil. The production of fresh market tomatoes in Brazil experienced great technological transformations, during the last decade. Among them, the use of F1 hybrid cultivars which produce fruits with extended shelf life (long shelf life cultivars) was, without one of doubt the most important. The expression 'long shelf life tomatoes' has been used in Brazil to describe the characteristics of extended post harvest life of fruits produced by some specific tomato cultivars (long shelf life cultivars). Long shelf life tomato cultivars can be obtained by the selection of favorable alleles for an improved pericarp firmness, by the utilization of ripening mutants (rin, nor and alc) and by modern molecular biology techniques.
