We analyzed the diet of Triportheus curtus in Lake Amapá on the Acre River (AC -Brazil), during three distinct phases of the hydrological cycle (pre-flooding, flooding, and post-flooding stages). The flooding occurred between January and June of 2009. Samples were collected monthly from October 2008 through September 2009. After collection (at 19:00, 01:00, 07:00, and 13:00 hs) and taxonomic identification, fish were eviscerated and their stomachs preserved in a 4% formalin solution for later analysis. The diet was evaluated by the Index of Relative Importance (IRI), and temporal variations (pre-flooding, flooding, and post-flooding) in the diet were summarized by an ordination technique (DCA). The diet of T. curtus was comprised of several orders of insects and microcrustaceans. In the pre-flooding stage, more than 62% of the diet consisted of Ostracoda. In the flooding phase, T. curtus fed mainly on Chaoboridae larvae (Diptera) (44.3%) and terrestrial insects (fragments) (33.7%). In the post-flooding phase, Chaoboridae comprised 80% of the diet. These results indicate that the utilization of food resources by T. curtus was variable, changing with alterations in the availability of resources, as influenced by the hydrological cycle. The population of T. curtus proved to be opportunistic, changing its diet in the course of the hydrological cycle.Neste estudo avaliamos a dieta de Triportheus curtus, no lago Amapá, rio Acre (AC -Brasil), em três períodos distintos do ciclo hidrológico (pré-pulso, pulso e pós-pulso). As coletas foram realizadas mensalmente de outubro de 2008 a setembro de 2009, e o pulso de cheia ocorreu entre janeiro e junho de 2009. Após as despescas (19:00, 01:00, 07:00 e 13:00 hs) e identificação taxonômica, os indivíduos foram eviscerados e os estômagos preservados em formalina 4% para posterior análise. A dieta foi avaliada através do Índice de Importância Relativa (IRI), e as variações temporais (pré-pulso, pulso e pós-pulso) na dieta foram sumarizadas através de uma análise de ordenação (DCA). A dieta de T. curtus foi composta de insetos de diferentes ordens e microcrustáceos. No pré-pulso, aproximadamente 62% da dieta foi composta por Ostracoda. No pulso, T. curtus consumiu principalmente larvas de Chaoboridae (Diptera) (44,3%) e insetos terrestres (fragmentos) (33,7%). No pós-pulso, larvas de Chaoboridae representaram 80% da dieta. Estes resultados indicam que a dieta de T. curtus varia temporalmente, e que a espécie pode ser considerada oportunista, alterando sua dieta de acordo com a abundância dos recursos nas diferentes fases do ciclo hidrológico.

ABSTRACT. Abiotic variables and phytoplankton effects on zooplanktonic community from a reservoir in northeast Brazil. Zooplankton from Mundaú reservoir, State of Pernambuco, northeast Brazil was studied concerning temporal (hours and seasonal period) and spatial (pelagic and coastal regions in different depths) variabilities, correlating them to the environmental variables and the phytoplankton. Twenty-three infrageneric and five subgeneric zooplankton taxa were observed. On the whole, Rotifera was the dominant group during this study, especially influenced by the oxygen concentrations. Phytoplankton was dominated by Cyanobacteria. On the dry period, physical variables certainly controlled the zooplankton's development, allowing elevated algal densities. On the rainy period, zooplankton correlation with the system's nutrients levels on pelagic region probably conduced to a resources competition between phytoplankton and zooplankton, controlling algal densities.KEYWORDS. RESUMO.O zooplâncton do reservatório de Mundaú, Pernambuco, nordeste do Brasil foi estudado quanto a variabilidade temporal (entre os horários e períodos seco chuvoso) e espacial (nas regiões pelágica e litorânea em diferentes profundidades) correlacionando-as com as variáveis ambientais e com o fitoplâncton. Vinte e três táxons infragenéricos e cinco subgenéricos de zooplâncton foram encontrados. De forma geral, Rotifera foi o grupo dominante em todo o estudo. O fitoplâncton foi dominado pelas cianobactérias. No período seco, as variáveis físicas certamente controlaram o desenvolvimento do zooplâncton, favorecendo o estabelecimento de elevadas densidades algais. No período chuvoso, a correlação do zooplâncton com os níveis de nutrientes do sistema na região pelágica provavelmente conduziu a uma competição de recursos entre o fitoplâncton e o zooplâncton, controlando as densidades algais. The rotifer community in Lago Amapá (abandoned meander lake of the Rio Acre floodplain) was investigated with respect to seasonal changes. Sampling was performed at three collection stations, generally weekly, during the dry season between May 8, 1997 and October 31, 1997, and during the rainy season between January 2, 1998 and February 24, 1998. The density and composition of rotifer species (48 taxons of rotifers) were determined, and their diversity and abundance were observed to be greater, respectively, at high-water and low-water. Anova was performed, by means of the F test, to test for seasonal differences in environmental variables and rotifers, showing that there was a highly statistically significant difference for pH and transparency (p < 0.01). Pearson's correlation was used to show that rotifer numbers during the low-water phase correlated negatively with electrical conductivity (r = -0.8824, p < 0.05) and during the high-water phase correlated negatively with depth (r = -0.7513, p < 0.05). Seasonal changes, caused by an increase in water levels and the low diversification of niches, influenced the composition and abundance of the animal group studied.
A comunidade de rotíferos do Lago Amapá (meandro abandonado da planície de inundação do Rio Acre) foi investigada sazonalmente. As amostragens foram realizadas semanalmente em três estações de coletas, em dois períodos: estação seca entre 08/V/1997 e 31/X/1997 e estação chuvosa, entre 02/I/1998 e 24/II/1998. A densidade e composição de rotíferos (48 táxons de rotíferos) foram determinadas. A diversidade e abundância foram caracterizadas por serem maiores, respectivamente, nas águas altas e águas baixas. Anova e teste F foram usados, visando observar diferenças sazonais nas variáveis ambientais e rotíferos. Transparência e pH foram estatisticamente altamente significativos (p < 0,01). As análises de correlações de Pearson revelaram que a condutividade elétrica foi negativamente correlacionada com a densidade de rotíferos (r = -0,8824; p < 0,05), na fase de águas baixas, bem como, profundidade, na fase de águas altas (r = -0,7513; p < 0,05). Mudanças sazonais, causadas pelas flutuações do nível da água, e baixa diversificação dos nichos influenciaram a composição e abundância do grupo estudado
