Estudo do crescimento e da reprodução de Bradybaena similaris (Férussac) (Mollusca, Xanthonychidae) em laboratório

Abstract: ABSTRACT. G rowth and reproduction of Bradybaena similaris (Férussac) (Moilusca, Xanthonychidae) in laboratory conditions. Biologica l aspects of Bradybaena similaris (Férussac, 182 1) were studied, such as: onset of sex ual maturity, occ urrence of self-fertilization, oviposi tion, incubation period, eclos ion rate and shell lengt h measurement at different stages of developme nt. It was noted that in isolated B. similaris the minimum and max imum ti me for reaching sexual maturity were 109 and 180 days, resp… Show more

“…Grouped animals reproduce earlier than either paired or isolated, as in Bradybaena similares (ALMEIDA & BESSA 2001). In B. similares sexual maturity for either grouped or isolated individuals occurred at 70 d after hatching, even thought grouped individuals laid eggs sooner (FURTADO et al 2004).…”

“…An 80% hatching success rate and a mean production of 23.4 eggs per snail in the laboratory over the same period were observed for the succineid Catinella rotundata (Gould 1846) (Stylommatophora: Succineidae) (Rundell & Cowie 2003). Likewise, in the same period of time, a production of 71.44 eggs per individual and an 81.22% hatching rate were reported for Bradybaena similaris (Férus-sac 1821) (Stylommatophora: Bradybaenidae) (Almeida & Bessa 2001). The authors also commented about the large intraspecific and interspecific variation in these variables among several different mollusks.…”

“…Different species of the same genus can show variations in the incubation period, as demonstrated in Succinea (Rundell & Cowie 2003, Dillen et al 2009). Variations in incubation period were previously reported for slugs and snails, and temperature was identified as an influential factor (Carrick 1942, Almeida & Bessa 2001. Carrick (1942) mentioned that the incubation period decreases with increasing temperature.…”

“…Esta atividade noturna foi observada em B. similaris por vários autores (OLIVEIRA et al, 1971;SANTOS, 1982;THOMÉ et al, 1996;ALMEIDA e BESSA, 2001). Durante o dia, em geral encontram-se abrigados na face inferior de folhas, na base da vegetação rasteira de plantas ornamentais e legumes (LEAHY, 1984).…”
