Alguns insetos transmissores de doenças procriam exclusivamente nas proximidades das residências. O Aedes aegypti, responsável por epidemias de dengue em cidades brasileiras, representa sério risco também para a febre amarela. Com o insucesso da campanha de erradicação do inseto, justifica-se a busca de criadouros fora do alcance das medidas de controle atualmente adotadas. Na Cidade de Vitória, ES, investigou-se a ocorrência de criadouros de Aedes aegypti na água coletada em bromélias nativas, sobre as rochas. Paralelamente, avaliou-se a infestação predial nas áreas urbanas contíguas. Em quatro das cinco áreas investigadas foram encontradas larvas de culicídeos nas bromélias, sendo que em duas foi identificado Aedes aegypti. A presença dos criadouros em bromélias não guardou relação com a infestação predial nas áreas próximas. Torna-se necessário definir se os criadouros em bromélias constituem focos primários do Aedes aegypti, ou se representam uma conseqüência da elevada infestação urbana.

The mosquito species Anopheles cruzii and Anopheles homunculus are co-occurring vectors for etiological agents of malaria in southeastern Brazil, a region known to be a major epidemic spot for malaria outside Amazon region. We sought to better understand the biology of these species in order to contribute to future control efforts by (1) improving species identification, which is complicated by the fact that the females are very similar, (2) investigating genetic composition and morphological differences between the species, (3) inferring their phylogenetic histories in comparison with those of other Anophelinae, and (4) dating the evolutionary divergence of the two species. To characterise the species we used wing geometry and mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) gene as morphological and genetic markers, respectively. We also used the genes white, 28S, ITS2, Cytb, and COI in our phylogenetic and dating analyses. A comparative analysis of wing thin-plate splines revealed species-specific wing venation patterns, and the species An. cruzii showed greater morphological diversity (8.74) than An. homunculus (5.58). Concerning the COI gene, An. cruzii was more polymorphic and also showed higher haplotype diversity than An. homunculus, with many rare haplotypes that were displayed by only a few specimens. Phylogenetic analyses revealed that all tree topologies converged and showed [Anopheles bellator+An. homunculus] and [Anopheles laneanus+An. cruzii] as sister clades. Diversification within the subgenus Kerteszia occurred 2-14.2millionyears ago. The landmark data associated with wing shape were consistent with the molecular phylogeny, indicating that this character can distinguish higher level phylogenetic relationships within the Anopheles group. Despite their morphological similarities and co-occurrence, An. cruzii and An. homunculus show consistent differences. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that the species are not sister-groups but species that recently diverged within the Kerteszia group, perhaps concomitantly with the radiation of bromeliads in South America or during the Pleistocene climate oscillations.

Relationship between invertebrate fauna and bromeliad size

Several bromeliads species store water and organic substrates, allowing the establishment of phytotelmata and associated fauna on their leaves. In this study, we sampled 70 individuals of Vriesea sp. (Carrière) (Bromeliaceae), in rupestrian fields in the Serra de Ouro Branco-MG, Brazil. The relationships between invertebrate species richness and abundance and size of bromeliads were tested using multiple regression. We found 19 species associated with bromeliads, mainly Diptera larvae. The abundance of the phytotelmate fauna increased principally in relation to the volume of water in the bromeliad reservoir. Phytotelmata richness was affected principally by diameter of the reservoir. There was a significant relationship between the abundance and richness of invertebrates associated with leaves with diameter and height of the plant. Invertebrate richness was better explained by abundance of individuals. These results suggest that the increase of richness was attended by higher numbers of microhabitats and more space for colonization of bigger bromeliads. Additionally, there was more chance of sampling different species in locales with greater abundance of individuals.Keywords: species-area relationship, phytotelmata fauna, insects, Bromeliaceae. Relação entre a fauna de invertebrados e o tamanho da bromélia ResumoMuitas espécies de bromélias são capazes de armazenar água e detritos, permitindo o estabelecimento de comunidades associadas aos seus tanques de água e às suas folhas. Neste trabalho, foram amostrados 70 indivíduos de Vriesea sp. (Carrière) (Bromeliaceae), em uma área de campo rupestre na Serra de Ouro Branco-MG, Brasil. Foi testada a relação entre a riqueza e a abundância das comunidades de invertebrados associados e o tamanho da bromélia. Em todos os casos foram utilizadas análises de regressão linear múltipla. Foram amostradas 19 espécies, principalmente larvas de Diptera associadas à bromélia. A abundância da fauna fitotelmata aumentou principalmente com o volume de água no reservatório da bromélia. Já a riqueza de fitotelmata foi relacionada principalmente com o diâmetro da planta. No entanto, a abundância e riqueza dos invertebrados associados às folhas apresentaram relação significativa com a altura e o diâmetro da planta. A riqueza de invertebrados foi mais bem explicada pela abundância de indivíduos do que pelo tamanho da bromélia. Estes resultados sugerem que o aumento da riqueza pode ter sido resultante do maior número de microhabitats e de espaço para colonização em bromélia de maior tamanho. Além disso, houve maior chance de amostrar espécies diferentes em locais com maior abundância de indivíduos.Palavras-chave: relação espécie-área, fauna fitotelmata, insetos, Bromeliaceae.
