Composição ictiofaunística da área de manguezal da Baía de Guaratuba, Paraná, Brasil

Abstract

ABSTRACT. FISII FAUNAL COMPOSITION OF TIIE MANGROVE AREA OF TIIE GUARATUBA BAY, PARANÁ, BRAZIL. The Guaratuba Bay (25°52'S, 48°39' W) is the second largest estuarine system of the State ofParana, Brazil. It extended inside ofthe continent for about 15 km and is sUITounded by mangtoves. Water depth can reach up to six meters. The fish faunal composition of this area was evaluated with a bottom trawl and, occasionally, casting and gill nets. One species of Chondrichthyes and 59 of the Actinopterygii (50 genera and 28 families) were reported I" om the Bay. The results were not significantly dilTerent fmm those ofthe Paranagua Bay, except by the lower number of species. These differe nces appear related to distinct collection efforts and the extension of surveyed areas. No species can be considered endel11ic to the region. Tipically tI'eshwater species were not collected.

Biology of Chirocentrodon bleekerianus (Poey, 1867) (Clupeiformes: Pristigasteridae) in a continental shelf region of southern Brazil

“…The high frequencies of mature females in the spring and summer and the high values of the Gonadossomatic index and of the Gonadal Condition factor in these seasons, indicated that the reproductive period of the species occured at this time. As females with emptied ovaries were not found in the present study, and because the species was not found in shallower areas than those of the present study (Godefroid, 1997(Godefroid, , 2002Corrêa, 1987;Chaves and Corrêa, 1998;Chaves and Vendel, 2001), it was possible that spawning occured at depths more than 15 meters. More studies on the biology of C. bleekerianus, as well as of other species of Clupeiformes, are necessary for a better understanding of the ecosystems where they occur, since they are, as a rule, abundant species.…”

Demersal ichthyofauna of the inner continental shelf off Ilhéus, Bahia, Brazil

“…Pleuronectiformes ("flatfishes") represent another highly abundant group in the soft bottom habitats of the Eastern South American coast (Vazzoler 1975, Fagundes Netto & Gaelzer 1991, Rocha & Rossi-Wongtschowski 1998, Muto et al 2000, and specific composition and dominance patterns among flatfishes also seems to vary across latitudinal and other environmental gradients (Araújo et al 1997, Chaves & Corrêa 1998, Godefroid et al 2004, Nunes & Rosa 1998. Relevantly though, the demersal fish assemblage recorded during the present study is highly similar to that recorded in the only other warm water/soft bottom locality that has been thoroughly sampled in Brazil (Nunes & Rosa 1998) (State of Paraíba).…”
