Cavichioli (1997) was the first to use female genitalia in a phylogenetic analysis in the Cicadellinae, in a study of the cicadelline genus Parathona Melichar that included traits of sternite VII, pygofer and second ovipositor valvulae. Features of valvifers, first and second valvulae, gonoplacs, and sternites VII and VIII were assessed for the cicadelline genus Balacha Melichar (Takiya & Mejdalani, 2004) and provided synapomorphies of the major lineages.…”

Cavichioli (1997) was the first to publish an analysis of phylogenetic relationships in the Cicadellinae using female genitalic characters. “…The outgroup choice was based on the subjective Erythrogonia generic group assembled by Young (1977), in the absence of known phylogenetic relationships among genera in the tribe Cicadellini. These generic groupings suggested by Young (1977) have been used as a source of possible outgroup taxa in all other specific phylogenetic analyses of genera of the Cicadellini ( Draeculacephala Ball: Dietrich, 1994; Parathona Melichar: Cavichioli, 1997; Lissoscarta Stål: Felix, 1999). The outgroups selected for our analysis were species belonging to four of the twenty‐seven genera included in the Erythrogonia generic group (with the number of valid species of each genus in parentheses): Pawiloma (twelve): Pawiloma ancora Young and Pawiloma victima (Germar), Pegogonia (one): Pegogonia rufipes (Fabricius), Sibovia (twenty‐seven): Sibovia picchitula Young and Sibovia sagata (Signoret), and Caragonalia Young (two): Caragonalia carminata (Signoret) and Caragonalia tarsalis (Signoret); one genus belonging to the Dilobopterus Signoret generic group (Young, 1977: 82), Amblyscarta Stål (twenty‐five): Amblyscarta bicincta (Germar), Amblyscarta invenusta Young and Amblyscarta stillifera (Stål); and recently described Caragonia Takiya, Cavichioli & Mejdalani (two): Caragonia bella Takiya, Cavichioli & Mejdalani (see Takiya et al ., 2003).…”
