Legr. (Myrtaceae)

Abstract: Valéria Cid Maia 1 ABSTRACT. CONSIDERATIONS ON STEPHOMYIA TAVARES (DIPTERA, CECIDOMYIIDAE, ASPHONDYLIIDI), WITH DESCRlPTION OF FOUR NEW SPECIES ASSOCIETED WITH EUGENIA L. E NEOMITHRANTHES OBSCURA(Dc.) LEGR. (MYRTACEAE). Stephomyia rotundifoliorum, sp.n., S. tetralobae, sp.n., S. espiralis, sp.n. and S. mina, sp.n. from Rio de Janeiro State are described. A brief diagnosis of the genus and two keys are presented-one to lalVae ofthe known species and one foravailable males. The new species are recorded from vari… Show more

“…Nevertheless, these host plant groups could be rich in gall-maker species exactly because they conform to the pattern suggested by the hypothesis, that is, flushing synchronously, resprouting and being speciose (and with these species in sympatry). It is a frequent question in gall-maker biology that a few genera or families of plants seem to bear so many species of gall-makers, for example Baccharis (Fernandes et al 1996), Quercus, Eucalyptus (Blanche and Westoby 1995) and Myrtaceae in general (Maia 1993, Gagné 1994, Maia et al 1996, particularly Eugenia. If it were possible to show whether these groups have synchronisation in flushing and resprouting in response to fire (along with hosting more gall-maker species) more commonly than comparable control ones, it would be a good indication that high gall-maker species richness is actually resulting from the presence of these physiological traits.…”

“…These studies cover aspects such as the description of new species (Maia, 1996a;Maia, 1996b); associations with parasitoids (Maia & Monteiro, 1999;Maia & Tavares, 2000); description of developmental stages (Maia, 1993) and patterns that influence the diversity of galls (Fernandes & Price, 1988;Fernandes et al, 1996;Fernandes et al, 1997a). However, other studies have focused on the description and characterization of galls from different localities Fernandes et al, 1997b;Maia, 2001;Maia & Fernandes, 2004;Urso-Guimarães et al, 2003;Urso-Guimarães & Scareli-Santos, 2006).…”
