This study reports 2 years of the population dynamics and reproduction of a small mammal community using the removal method. The study was conducted in a rural area of the Atlantic Forest, in Sumidouro, Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil. The population sizes, age structure and reproduction were studied for the four most common species in the study area. The overall diversity was 1.67 and ranged between 0.8 to 1.67. The species richness was 13 considering the whole study. The most abundant species were the rodents Nectomys squamipes (n = 133), Akodon cursor (n = 74), Oligoryzomys nigripes (n = 25) and the marsupials Didelphis aurita (n = 58) and Philander frenatus (n = 50). Seven other rodents were captured once: Necromys lasiurus, Akodon montensis, Sooretamys angouya, Oecomys catherine, Oxymycterus judex, Euryzygomatomys spinosus and Trinomys iheringi. There were higher peaks for diversity and species richness during the winter (dry) months, probably due to higher food availability. The marsupials had a seasonal reproduction with highest population sizes at the end of the rainy seasons. Nectomys squamipes reproduced mostly during rainy periods. Akodon cursor reproduced predominantly in the winter with the highest population peaks occurring during this season. The analysis of the population dynamics of the rodent species indicated that no species behaved as an agricultural pest, probably due to the heterogeneous landscape of high rotativity of vegetable cultivation. Rodent populations were more susceptible to the removal procedure than marsupial ones.Keywords: marsupials, rodents, diversity, long-term study. Populações de pequenos mamíferos em um agro-ecossistema no domínio da Mata Atlântica, sudeste do Brasil ResumoEste estudo reporta dois anos da dinâmica populacional e reprodução de uma comunidade de pequenos mamíferos através de método de remoção. O estudo foi realizado numa área rural na Mata Atlântica, em Sumidouro, Rio de Janeiro, Brasil. Os tamanhos populacionais, a estrutura etária e a reprodução foram estudados para as quatro espécies mais comuns na área de estudo. A diversidade total foi de 1,67 e variou entre 0,8 e 1,67. A riqueza de espécies foi de 13, considerando-se o estudo todo. As espécies mais abundantes foram os roedores Nectomys squamipes (n = 133), Akodon cursor (n = 74) e Oligoryzomys nigripes (n = 25) e os marsupiais Didelphis aurita (n = 58) e Philander frenatus (n = 50 comportou como praga agrícola, provavelmente devido ao ambiente heterogêneo de alta rotatividade de cultivos de legumes. As populações dos roedores foram mais suscetíveis ao procedimento de remoção do que as dos marsupiais.Palavras-chave: marsupiais, roedores, diversidade, estudo de longo prazo.

Distribution and abundance of small mammals in relation to the landscape of the Passa-Cinco River basin, São Paulo, Brazil.The Corumbataí Basin is used as the main source of water supply for the municipal districts of Piracicaba and Rio Claro, being the Passa-Cinco River its main tributary. The Passa-Cinco river basin can be considered as a convenient model for the study of the conservation of biodiversity for it contains the main existing agroecosystems in the state of São Paulo. So that conservationist strategies can be established, some information is required, such as how biodiversity is affected, and which strategies the population of wild species use to keep themselves in the altered forest remainings. Small mammals, such as rodends and marsupials can be considered a good group to help answer these questions, for this group develops an important ecological role in forest environments, through the predation and dispersion of seeds. From August 2003 to January 2005 surveys on small mammals were carried out using 160 Sherman type traps distributed in lines, in 16 sample country properties, being 4 in each type of environment that is predominant in the landscape: native forest, Eucalyptus plantation, sugar-cane plantation and pastures. In this period, 177 rodend and marsupial individuals were captured, which were distributed in 8 species, with a 0,77% rate of success in capture. There was significative difference among the studied environments in terms of abundance, but not in terms of the richness of the species. Also, we could observe a clear distinction between forest and non-forest habitats. Apparently, the native forest remainings in the region lost their species which are the most demanding in relation to the quality of habitat, in such a way that the current community is basically formed of generalists, which are a characteristic of degraded areas. The loss of forest species not only alters the community of small mammals, but also favors the occurrence of species from non-forest areas which can bring, among other things, problems related to public health. Eventhough, the small mammal community from the Passa-Cinco river basin is worth conservationist efforts which must give priority to studies relating the environmental law enforcement to the changes this might generate to the community of small mammals.

Apresentamos um conjunto de atividades experimentais direcionadas ao ensino de física geral no 2° período dos cursos de engenharia organizadas na forma de uma sequência, em que os alunos exploram, testam e discutem o comportamento de uma borracha tracionada. Expandimos a expressão para a força elástica, acrescentando à lei de Hooke um termo quadrático que permite uma discussão didática dos parâmetros "módulo de Young" e "coeficiente de Poisson". A fundamentação teórica adotada no desenvolvimento da proposta se apóia na teoria sócio-histórica de Vigotski. Ao longo das atividades, buscamos formar novos conceitos somente a partir do momento em que os alunos tomaram consciência de suas necessidades.
