“…Thousands of the well-known ''avoante'' Zenaida auriculata (Eared Dove) can be observed nesting on the ground in many localities in the semi-arid region during their reproductive season-a phenomenon locally known as ''arribação'' or ''pombal''. Nesting usually occurs during the dry period, and ''arribação'' is historically known to favor poor local farmers in this semi-arid region as the eggs and the birds themselves are captured by the tens or hundreds of thousands and sold along roadsides or in public markets (Sobreira 1921;Aguirre 1976;Antas 1986).…”

“…Participants (45%) said that during the rainy season, the Eared Dove (Zenaida auriculata) travels in search of water and food, returning when beans (Phaseolus vulgaris) and Croton (Croton blanchetianus) (Euphorbiaceae) ripen. Euphorbiaceae (common in northeastern Brazil) are among the most important food plants for the dove (Antas 1987). The Lined Seedeater (Sporophila lineola) migrates during the dry season and may go as far as the llanos of Venezuela (Silva 1995).…”
