Dynamic of land use/cover change processes in a Brazilian semiarid watershed A B S T R A C TThe changes in the use and occupation of land, caused by human actions, have created major impacts on the landscapes. These impacts can be mitigated by monitoring the use and land cover, using spatial and temporal information of the changes occurring in the landscape. This paper presents a detailed analysis of spatial and temporal dynamics of land use and occupation of the stream São Paulo watershed, located in the semiarid region of Pernambuco State, during the period from 1991 to 2010. Based on the classification of three satellite images for the years 1991, 2000 and 2010, transition matrices were used associated with the algebra of maps, and landscape metrics. The results showed that during the studied period, the classes of land use and occupation went through a major transition, with the gradual replacement of sparse area of 'caatinga' vegetation by grazing areas/agriculture. Along with the rapid growth of the grazing areas/agriculture class, the predominant landscape of native vegetation has been replaced by a landscape increasingly devastated, fragmented and heterogeneous, as shown by the index of landscape metrics.
AbstractHigh deforestation in the Caatinga Biome has been generating processes of desertification in several areas, directly altering the biota, the microclimate and the soils, being essential the development of research techniques able to incorporate information which identify the state of natural resources, pointing their relationships and some paths to be taken for an effective intervention which may generate the recovery and sustainable use of land in this environment. The MTLFC consists of a set of techniques used in Brazil for the first time to analyze areas subjected to desertification, presenting biogeographic, climatological, geomorphological and hydrological indicators. By applying the method in an area of the city of São Domingos do Cariri (PB), it has been identified a very low plant diversity (13 species and 489 individuals), dominance of a few species (5) and low abundance, with the largest number of individuals in tall shrub and shrub strata, caused by the excessive removal of vegetation, fires and continuous use by the goats. The Water Balance was negative so that it indicated that the vegetative activity depends on hidden precipitation. The soils have presented surface crust of an anthropic origin, making edaphic aridity even more pronounced, associated with low fertility levels, particularly potassium and organic matter.Key words: Desertification; MTLFC; Natural indicators; Land Use. This research aimed to study the spatial distribution of tuberculosis and its relationship with living conditions in the urban area of the city of Campina Grande in the period from 2004 until 2007. It is an ecologic study which used the city's neighborhood distribution; demographic, social and economic data from year 2000 census; and the new cases of tuberculosis reported to the Disease and Reporting Information System. Georeferencing was done for the cases of tuberculosis, and disease incidence was calculated by neighborhood. Rates were softened and the Global Moran Index was calculated. Social-economic data were grouped in quartiles according to the Life Condition Index, calculating the incidence of TB in each stratum of living conditions. The results showed that the spatial distribution of tuberculosis in the city is not uniform. Grouping neighborhoods according to the Life Conditions Index revealed social differences that can justify the occurrence of higher incidence rates in the most socially and economically vulnerable regions. The best living condition stratum presented a high incidence possibly due to the underreporting of the cases of tuberculosis caused mainly by the centralization of disease control services. We hope that this study may help outline control strategies for the city of Campina Grande, from the perspective of health promotion, for a disease so socially determined, as is the case of TB.
ABSTRACTDesertification is the degradation of lands in worldwide dry areas, having the climate influence and human activities as main causes. In Brazil, the cariri region in Paraiba, besides the strong shortages periods which it is submitted, has become the scene of a heavy process of desertification, reaching principally the existing caatingas, currently compromising the largest part of its territory. Despite of their natural characteristics and a high presence of desert areas, the soils, except for some areas submitted to irrigation, have remained at the levels of chemical fertility without great amendments. However aspects related to changes in the temperature of these soils, due to intense deforestation, and the effects of the process in the vegetation, should be taken into consideration when thinking about a spontaneous regeneration of the caatingas and the use of these lands as agriculture and farming ventures. Keywords: Desertification, Old Cariris, Deforestation, Soils.
Revista Brasileira de Geografia Física 02 (2012) Mapping of Land for Agricultural Mechanization -State of Paraíba A B S T R A C TThis study aimed to identify, quantify and map the lands of the State of Paraíba to agricultural mechanization and present a spatialized analysis of the limiting factors on the basis of suitability to the operations of tillage. The map of slope was generated from altimetry data file SRTM, using SPRING. The maps of the other attributes were di-agnostic interpretation of data obtained from soil survey of the Exploratory Soil-Recognition of the State of Paraíba. The map of classes and subclasses of land for mechanization was generated by crossing the map of the partial interpretation map of soil slope using the LEGAL. The results show that 82.85% of land in Paraíba are Class IV, V and VI of suitability to mechanization, which have respectively degree of limitation strong, very strong and extremely strong, and are located predominantly in the inner regions of semi-arid climate. The lands most suitable for mechanization are located on the coast, and to a lesser extent, in areas flatter interior dividers watersheds and flat tops of hills.
