Aims: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) also generates emotional burden in the patient's family members, but no study has evaluated the specific dimensions of burden. The objectives were to evaluate the dimensions of the Zarit Burden Interview (ZBI) and possible correlates.Methods: This was a cross-sectional study involving 47 patients and 47 caregivers, using a sociodemographic questionnaire; the ZBI; the Self Reporting Questionnaire; the Family Accommodation Scale; and the Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale. The ZBI factor analysis was conducted using Varimax Rotation.Results: Six factors were identified, explaining 74.2% of the total variance: factor 1, interference in the caregiver's personal life (36.6% of the variance); factor 2, perception of patient's dependence (10.8%); factor 3, feelings of irritation or intolerance (9.2%); factor 4, guilt (7.2%); factor 5, insecurity (5.6%); and factor 6, embarrassment (4.8%). The six ZBI factors were associated with greater OCD severity and with greater accommodation to the patient's symptoms, and factors 1, 2, 5 and 6 with caregiver's psychological morbidity. Caregiver's sex (female) was associated with factors 5 and 6, relationship with the patient (being a parent or son/daughter) with factor 5, higher educational level with factor 6, living with the patient with factor 3, worse self-evaluation of health with factors 1, 5 and 6, and occupational status (not working) with factors 1, 2, 5 and 6. Conclusion:The dimensions of burden identified indicate the most affected aspects of a caregiver's life and could guide the planning of more specific interventions. Thus, the caregiver could participate more effectively in the OCD patient's treatment, with a lower impact on his/her life.

Introduction: The burden of care in family refers to the weight caused by the primary caregiver role to psychiatric patients and the difficulties encountered in performing this function in daily life.Objectives: Assessing the objective and subjective overload of family members who live with the reality of psychiatric disorder in a child day-care psychosocial care center. Methods:Cross-sectional study, descriptive-exploratory, of quantitative approach, with non-probabilistic samples of accidental type with 80 families of psychiatric patients held in a Psychosocial Care Center. For overload evaluation, the subscales "B" and "D" of the Family Overload Rating Scale (FBIS-BR) were used. Results:The study was conducted with 80 families of psychiatric patients. The average age of female caregivers was 39.6 years old, and IntroductionUntil the mid-twentieth century, psychiatry offered the people suffering from mental disorders inhuman and inefficient care, which caused more damage than healing to mental health. Admissions were held for long periods with treatment similar to torture methods. In this context, the psychiatric patients could spend the rest of their lives in treatment in mental institutions [1].The mental health care in these asylums was focused on practice and medical knowledge, whose assistance was restricted to admission and medication to combat the symptoms evidenced by psychiatric patients, excluding them of the bond, interactions and all that configured it as part and product of their knowledge [2].The reality of asylums lasted until the process of deinstitutionalization of mental health, which took place in Brazil through the Psychiatric Reform which was characterized as a historical movement of political, social and economic character, which involved since breaking the practiced model to the nursing care excluding the model based on admission of psychiatric patients in mental hospitals [3].In the current model of mental health assistance, the family is entered as partner in the psychosocial rehabilitation process of person with psychiatric disorder, and can contribute to the effectiveness and efficaciousness of substitute services as also responsible for the treatment [4].The process of change in the manner of treating the psychiatric patient, keeping the person with disorder within the family, is accompanied by the emergence of family burden factors, as we note that the family would not be prepared to accept mental disorders affected people [5]. Overloading of the family is defined as the feeling of weight caused by the constant provision of care to psychiatric patients and the difficulties encountered in the role of caregiver's performance in everyday [6].Family members of mentally ill need care or assistance in relation to their own health and that of their hospitalized family member. RESUMO: Trata-se de estudo retrospectivo e exploratório, realizado em instituição psiquiátrica com o objetivo de caracterizar os pacientes acometidos por Transtorno Obsessivo Compulsivo quanto ao sexo, idade, proveniência, tempo de internação, tipo de alta, tipo de internação e fonte financiadora da internação. A amostra foi constituída por 61 pacientes sendo predominante o sexo feminino (47-77%), a faixa etária acima de 41 anos (41-67%), provenientes da própria família (31-50,8%) e o tempo de internação de 30 dias (33-54,1%). A alta médica foi a mais frequente (51-83,6%), houve prevalências similares entre as primeiras internações (30-49,2%) e reinternações (31-50,8%); o principal financiador das internações hospitalares foi o Sistema Único de Saúde (54-88,5%). Ações que visem diagnosticar precocemente o transtorno devem ser desenvolvidas para que o tratamento seja prontamente iniciado a fim de evitar o agravamento de obsessões e compulsões.ABSTRACT: This is a retrospective, exploratory study, undertaken in a psychiatric institution with the aim of characterizing the patients affected by Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder by sex, age, provenance, duration of hospitalization, type of discharge, type of hospitalization, and source of financing of hospitalization. The sample comprised 61 patients, the majority of whom were female (47-77%), age range over 41 years old (41-67%), who came to hospital from the family home (31-50.8%) and length of hospitalization of 30 days (33-54.1%). The most frequent type of discharge was medical (51-83.6%), and there were similar prevalences for first hospitalizations (30-49.2%) and re-hospitalizations (31-50.8%); the main financer for hospitalization was the Unified Health System (54-88.5%). Actions for the early diagnosis of this disorder must be developed so that the treatment may be initiated promptly, so as to avoid the worsening of obsessions and compulsions.
