Objective: To evaluate the pattern of alcohol consumption and the prevalence and factors associated with binge drinking among university students of health-related courses in Aracaju, Sergipe, Brazil. Methods: A cross-sectional study was performed of 865 female students from two universities in the Brazilian Northeast. The instruments used were the AUDIT and a questionnaire used to collect sociodemographic data. The chi-square test and logistic regression were used, with statistical significance set at p-value < 0.05. Results: Risky alcohol consumption was evidenced in 16.4%, while the prevalence of binge drinking was 48.0%. Binge drinking was strongly associated with drunk driving (OR = 12.24) and living in a conflicting family environment (OR = 6.33). Binge drinking was a constant in students who engaged in fights, those who had problems with the law and among smokers. Conclusion: The high prevalence of risky alcohol consumption, binge drinking and the association of these with risky behaviors in students serve to guide future public policies on prevention.Keywords: Alcohol Drinking; Women's Health; Students; Health Care. resumen Objetivo: Evaluar el patrón de consumo de alcohol, la prevalencia y los factores asociados al binge drinking entre estudiantes universitarias en el área de salud en Aracaju/SE. Métodos: Estudio transversal con 865 mujeres estudiantes de dos universidades del Nordeste brasileño. Los instrumentos fueron el AUDIT y las características sociodemograficas. Se utilizó la Chi-cuadrada y regresión logística, con nivel de significancia de 0,05. Resultados: El patrón de consumo de riesgo se muestra en el 16,4%, mientras que la prevalencia del binge drinking fue de 48,0% y fue también más fuertemente asociada con conducir en estado etílico (OR = 12,24) y vida familia conflictiva (OR = 6,33). La borrachera fue constante entre las estudiantes que participaron en peleas con agresión física o problemas con la ley y entre las fumadoras. Conclusión: La alta prevalencia de consumo de riesgo, binge drinking y su asociación con comportamientos de riesgos entre académicas sirven para orientar las futuras políticas públicas preventivas.

ABSTRACT:Objective: To evaluate the association between the consumption of psychoactive substances (tobacco, alcohol and illicit drugs) and demographic variables, mental health and family context among school-aged children. Methods: The National Adolescent School-based Health Survey was held with a national sample of 109,104 students. Data regarding demographic variables, family background and mental health were collected. Logistic regression was used to evaluate the associations of interest. Results: Multivariate analyses showed that alcohol consumption was higher among girls, drug experimentation was more frequent among boys and that there was no difference between sexes for smoking. Being younger and mulatto were negatively associated with the use of tobacco, alcohol and illicit drugs. Also negatively associated with such risk behaviors were characteristics of the family context represented by: living with parents, having meals together and parental supervision (when parents know what the child does in their free time). Moreover, characteristics of mental health such as loneliness and insomnia were positively associated with use of tobacco, alcohol and illicit drugs. Not having friends was positively associated with use of tobacco and illicit drugs and negatively associated with alcohol use. Conclusions: The study shows the protective effect of family supervision in the use of tobacco, alcohol and drugs and, on the contrary, the increasing use of substances according to aspects of mental health, such as loneliness, insomnia and the fact of not having friends. The study's findings may support actions from health and education professionals, as well as from the government and families in order to prevent the use of these substances by adolescents.

Contexto: O consumo de álcool e outras drogas por adolescentes têm crescido nos últimos anos, considerado um problema de saúde pública, razão para estudos e envolvimento da sociedade na busca de soluções preventivas. Objetivo: Avaliar o risco de problemas relacionados ao uso de álcool e outras drogas entre estudantes do 6º ao 9º ano de uma escola pública do ensino fundamental. Métodos: A amostra foi definida pelo critério de amostragem não probabilístico, com participação de 55 adolescentes. Os dados foram obtidos mediante a aplicação do inventário DUSI - Drug Use Screening Inventory, que é composto por 149 questões divididas em 10 áreas. Resultados: Não há diferença entre sexo na intensidade geral de problemas. As áreas com maior risco de problemas referem-se ao sistema familiar e ao lazer/recreação. Os sujeitos de 10 anos apresentam risco menor de problemas, comparados à média geral do grupo em relação aos sujeitos mais velhos. A análise das médias da densidade mostrou que meninos e meninas apresentam resultados semelhantes na maioria das áreas. Conclusão: Há necessidade de investimentos em lazer/recreação saudáveis e adequados, visto essa ser a área de maior risco para problemas associados ao uso de álcool e outras drogas.
