Objective: to describe the factors related to psychological impairment and quality of life (QoL) of patients with schizophrenia. Method: a cross-sectional, descriptive and correlational study, carried out with 119 schizophrenics. A questionnaire of sociodemographic and clinical variables was applied, plus BPRS-A and QLS-BR scales. Chi-square test and Spearman’s correlation were used, Results: seventy-seven were male and 44 were using typical medications. The “Number of times they were hospitalized” related to “Time of illness” that patients live with schizophrenia showed significance (p=0.266); 91.7% had a severe occupational level (n=109); 34.5% (n=41) had moderate impairment. Conclusion: the greater the degree of psychological impairment, the worse the QoL, this worsening may be related to several factors, as well as disease symptoms.

Background: Sexual dysfunction is frequent in patients with schizophrenia, it is reported as one of the most distressing antipsychotic's adverse effects and it is directly related to treatment compliance. Objectives: a) to evaluate the accuracy of the Arizona Sexual Experience Scale (ASEX) to identify sexual dysfunction; b) to assess the frequency of sexual dysfunction in a sample of outpatients with schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder under antipsychotic therapy; and c) to investigate the effect of different antipsychotics on sexual function. Method: Outpatients with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder were asked to fulfill both the ASEX and the Dickson Glazer Scale for the Assessment of Sexual Functioning Inventory (DGSFi) at a single interview. Results: 137 patients were interwied. The sensitivity and specificity of the ASEX in relation to DGSFi were: 80.8%, (95% CI = 70.0%-88.5%) and 88.1% (95% CI = 76.5%-94.7%), and the misclassification rate was 9.5%. The ROC curve comparing the ASEX and the DGSFi scores revealed a value of 0.93 (CI = 0.879-0.970), with the optimum cut-off point of ASEX being 14/15. Sexual dysfunction measured was higher in females (79.2%) than in males (33.3%) (χ 2 = 27.41, d.f. = 1, p < 0.001). Discussion: Patients under antipsychotic treatment showed a high level of sexual complaints, and the ASEX proved to be an accurate instrument to identify sexual dysfunction in an outpatient sample of patients with schizophrenia spectrum. Females showed a higher frequency of sexual dysfunctions and sexual drive and ability to reach orgasm were the most affected areas. The use of antipsychotics, especially the combinations, was more likely to impair sexual functioning.

A definição do Transtorno Obsessivo-Compulsivo (TOC) indica um espectro que se caracteriza por pensamentos obsessivos (obsessões) e por comportamentos repetitivos ou atos mentais (compulsões). As principais alternativas de tratamento são as farmacológicas e as psicoterápicas, no entanto, estima-se que aproximadamente 40 a 60% dos pacientes não atinjam alívio satisfatório dos sintomas. Desta forma, apresentamos o Kundalini Yoga, como um tratamento complementar. Foram realizadas 36 sessões com um protocolo de técnicas “específicas para o TOC”. Foram utilizados para avaliação os seguintes instrumentos: as Escalas Obsessivo-Compulsivo (YBOCS) e dimensional (DYBOCS), os inventários Beck de Ansiedade (BAI), e o Teste de Qualidade de Vida da OMS (WHOQOL). Nesta pesquisa com 24 pacientes adultos, houve uma melhora significativa (46%) na gravidade do TOC, especialmente nos sintomas de conteúdo sexual/religioso (54%) e de contaminação (33%). Também melhoraram em quase 48% os sintomas de ansiedade e todos os aspectos da qualidade de vida (física 9,7%, psicológica 11,7%, social 12,6% e ambiental 4,8%). O Kundalini Yoga se mostrou uma ferramenta efetiva para aliviar os sintomas do TOC em algumas dimensões, reduzir a ansiedade e melhorar a qualidade de vida.
