Baseado na complexa e multidimensional definição de democracia racial estabelecida por Antonio Sérgio Alfredo Guimarães (mito, ideal e pacto), examinamos como Casa-grande & senzala participa da construção do pacto racial-democrático ensaiado no final dos anos 1930 no Brasil. Para isso analisamos como Gilberto Freyre estabelece discurso performativo sobre a democracia racial, em que supostamente se constatariam as interações não racistas dos brasileiros, ao mesmo tempo que também articula um discurso da democracia racial como pedagogia, em que ele desmente os estigmas raciais relacionados à presença do negro no Brasil, e busca celebrar as contribuições materiais e imateriais dos negros à cultura brasileira. Pretendemos mostrar como as ações linguísticas geradas no texto formam um campo de força discursivo essencial para a elaboração da democracia racial como pacto.

In this article, we aim to reflect on the emergence and manipulation of social feelings in the context of intense transformations, called cold periods in history by Durkheim. The event known in the mainstream media as the ‘gay kit’, and political and religious articulations surrounding its suppression in 2011, is the empirical basis for our analysis. As a counterpoint, we will identify narratives and conservative activism organized around Bill No. 6583/2013, also known as the Family Statute, which has been the subject of numerous public debates, especially in 2015. In both cases, we reflect on social fears, morally based panic and on the situated activation of the rhetoric of loss by politicians with religious conservative liberal profiles.

Gilberto Freyre, the great Brazilian historian and sociologist, described Brazil as a ‘racial paradise’, a place where different races and nationalities have come to live together in a sort of ‘racial democracy’. The literature on this topic has become extensive as anthropologists, social scientists and historians felt the need to either prove or disprove such a claim. The argument that Brazil is a racial paradise or democracy is certainly romantic, even utopian; but it is true that Brazil has not experienced the sort of racial friction that has been found in places such as South Africa (e.g. apartheid) or the USA (e.g. segregation laws). This article analyses interculturalism and non‐formal education in Brazilian society from the perspective of Martin Buber's philosophy of dialogue and demonstrates some of the advantages interculturalism has over multiculturalism. We further suggest that the example of modern and contemporary Brazil follows Martin Buber in ‘pointing the way’ for other countries and for other societies and cultures.
