-Due to the large increase in the area cultivated with genetically modified soybean in Brazil, it has become necessary to determine methods that are fast and efficient for detecting these cultivars. The aim of this work was to test the efficiency of the toothpick method in the detection of RR soybean plants, as well as to distinguish between cultivars, for sensitivity caused by herbicide. Ten transgenic soybean cultivars, resistant to the active ingredient glyphosate, and ten conventional soybean cultivars were used. Toothpicks soaked in glyphosate were applied to all the plants at stage V6 and evaluations were made at 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 days after application (DAA). The effects of the glyphosate on the cultivars, and the symptoms of phytotoxicity caused in the transgenic plants were evaluated by means of grading scales. The toothpick test is effective in identifying RR soybean cultivars and also in separating them into groups by sensitivity to the symptoms caused by the glyphosate.Key words: Glycine max. Herbicide.RESUMO -Devido ao grande aumento da área cultivada com soja geneticamente modificada no Brasil, faz-se necessária a determinação de métodos que sejam rápidos e eficientes na detecção dessas cultivares. O objetivo deste trabalho foi testar a eficiência do método do palito na detecção de plantas de soja RR, bem como distinguir as cultivares quanto à sensibilidade causada pelo herbicida. Foram utilizadas dez cultivares de soja transgênica, resistentes ao ingrediente ativo glifosato, e dez cultivares de soja convencional. Palitos de dente embebidos em glifosato foram aplicados em todas as plantas em estádio V6 e as avaliações foram realizadas aos 2; 4; 6; 8 e 10 dias após a aplicação (DAA). Os efeitos da ação do glifosato nas cultivares e os sintomas de fitotoxicidade, ocasionados nas plantas transgênicas, foram avaliados por meio de escalas de notas. O teste do palito é eficiente para identificar as cultivares de soja RR e, além disso, separá-las em grupos de sensibilidade aos sintomas causados pelo glifosato.Palavras-chave: Glycine max. A garantia de sementes com elevado vigor e boa qualidade é fundamental para o sucesso de qualquer cultura. Sementes com baixo vigor podem apresentar dificuldades na germinação e emergência em campo, sob condições não favoráveis, como a falta de umidade ou baixas temperaturas. Portanto, os produtores, na tentativa de reduzir custos de produção, têm separado grãos da safra produzida para serem utilizados como sementes e isso tem sido cada vez mais frequente. Assim, este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar o potencial fisiológico de sementes de soja Roundup Ready com sementes convencionais, e comparar sementes "salvas", produzidas por um produtor com sementes comerciais. As sementes foram caracterizadas em laboratório (pureza, massa de mil sementes e teor de água), submetidas a testes de vigor (envelhecimento acelerado, teste de frio e condutividade elétrica), teste de germinação, emergência em areia, índice de velocidade de emergência, crescimento de plântulas, comprimento de raízes e parte aérea das plântulas e matéria fresca e seca. Foi possível identificar maior pureza nas sementes comerciais do que nas sementes "salvas". Os lotes das cultivares convencionais apresentaram potencial fisiológico superior às cultivares de soja Roundup Ready, porém, entre as sementes "salvas" e comerciais não houve diferença quanto ao vigor.Palavras-chave: germinação, pureza, sistema de produção, teste de vigor. A B S T R A C TThe guarantee of seeds with high vigor and good quality is the most important characteristic for the success in soybean cropping. Seeds with low vigor may show some difficulty on germination and field emergence, mainly under adverse conditions, such as moisture deficiency or low temperatures. Thus, this study aimed at evaluating the physiological potential of Roundup Ready (RR) and conventional soybean seeds, 'saved' by a farmer as well as commercial seeds. Nevertheless, some farmers, in an attempt to reduce production costs, have already separated cropped grains produced to be used as seeds and it has been increasingly common. So, this trial aimed at evaluating the physiological potential of Roundup Ready soybean seeds with conventional seeds, and compare the 'saved' seeds, produced by a farmer with commercial seeds. The seeds were characterized in the laboratory (purity, mass of thousand seeds and moisture content). Vigor (accelerated aging, cold test and electrical conductivity test), germination test, emergence on sand, emergence speed index, seedling growth, roots and shoots length of seedlings as well as fresh and dry matter were determined. It was possible to identify that the commercial seeds showed higher purity when compared to the saved ones. Plots of conventional cultivars showed higher physiological potential, and there was no difference concerning the vigor between the 'saved' seeds and commercial ones.

Pre-harvest desiccation with glyphosate and quality of stored soybean seeds

Seeds from non-genetically modified soybean cultivars harvested after chemical desiccation of plants with glyphosate may produce abnormal seedlings; these may show phytotoxicity symptoms that could persist even after some time of storage due to accumulation of toxic residues. This study aimed to evaluate the quality of stored soybean seeds harvested after chemical desiccation of plants with glyphosate at R7 stage. Seeds from soybean cultivar 'Conquista' were produced with and without desiccation with glyphosate, at the dose 2.0 L ha -1 , applied at physiological maturity stage. Seed quality was evaluated right after harvest and after eight months of storage by tests of moisture content, mass, germination and vigor. The experimental design was the completely randomized block with four replications. Data was submitted to variance analysis and means were compared by the Tukey test (p ≤ 0.05) as a 2 x 2 factorial. The results show deleterious effects of glyphosate used as desiccant for early harvest of soybean seeds from conventional cultivars. Accelerating plant senescence leads to production of seeds with lower germination and decreased seedling development, although the percentage of abnormal seedlings is reduced after 8 months of storage possibly due to degradation of toxic residues of glyphosate and/or derivates. Key words: Glycine max, phytotoxicity, physiological maturity, germination, seedling development ResumoSementes de cultivares convencionais de soja colhidas após dessecação química das plantas com glifosato podem produzir plântulas anormais, com sintomas de fitotoxicidade que podem persistir mesmo após o armazenamento devido ao acúmulo de resíduos tóxicos. Este trabalho objetivou avaliar a qualidade de sementes armazenadas de soja colhidas após dessecação química das plantas com glifosato no estádio R7. Sementes de soja da cultivar Conquista foram produzidas com e sem dessecação das plantas com glifosato, na dose de 2,0 L ha -1 , no estádio de maturidade fisiológica. A qualidade das sementes foi avaliada logo após a colheita e aos oito meses de armazenamento quanto ao teor de água, massa, germinação e vigor. O delineamento experimental foi o inteiramente casualizado, com quatro repetições. Os dados foram submetidos à análise de variância e as médias comparadas pelo teste de Tukey (p≤0,05), em esquema fatorial 2 x 2.
