Mechanical damage constitutes one of the factors limiting production of high quality soybean seeds. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects on seed viability and mechanical damage caused to soybean seeds when using a grain cart, together with an auger unloading system, as a means of transporting grain from the combine to the truck. Seed samples were collected in two seed production fields in the region of Abelardo Luz, SC, Brazil, at three different times (10:00, 12:30, and 16:00) and from three places (in the combine grain tank, in the grain wagon, and in the truck). The percentages of broken seeds, moisture content, mechanical damage to the seed coat, and germination were evaluated. The use of auxiliary grain cart equipment contributed to an increase in breakage and mechanical injury in seeds, worsening seed viability. Seeds collected at lower moisture contents had higher breakage and higher rates of mechanical damage.

Immediate and latent effects of drying soybeans with dehydrated air

New grain drying techniques have been improved to reduce post-harvest losses. The electric air dehumidifier (UTA 60®) is an example; it was installed at the ELLITT Seed Company for drying soybean seeds (TEC 7849) with random sample collection (DIC). Our objective was to evaluate the immediate and latent effects of the dehumidified air on the vigour of the seeds. Our vigour analysis method was based on the Rules for Seed Analysis (RAS), and our results showed an immediate significant difference in seedling percentage, but the germination level did not have an effect at 5% (Dunnett's test). In latent effects, at 5% (Tukey test), there was a reduction in the germination percentage and emergence rate, but it was not possible link such variations to the drying process. The germination potential was classified as "highest vigour", and it was possible to conclude that dehydrating drying air with UTA constituted a method capable of maintaining seed quality and germinative vigour.

Daño mecánico en semillas de dos cultivares de poroto (Phaseolus vulgaris L.), impacto sobre la fisiología de la germinación Mechanical harm in seeds of two cultivars of bean (Phaseolus vulgarisL RESUMENLa calidad de la semilla decae como consecuencia del deterioro. Se analizó el impacto del daño inducido en semillas de poroto de los cultivares Perla INTA (blanco) y NAG 12 INTA (negro) sobre la fisiología de su germinación. Para ello, muestras de cada cultivar fueron deterioradas dejándolas caer sobre un plato metálico cero, dos y cuatro veces. Posteriormente, se evaluaron porcentajes de germinación, conductividad eléctrica, parámetros y tasas de crecimiento de plántulas; y la actividad de la a-amilasa en cotiledones y embriones durante los primeros tres días de iniciada la imbibición de la semilla. Si bien en poroto blanco y negro los porcentajes de germinación no mostraron diferencias significativas respecto del testigo, solo el tratamiento con dos golpes en poroto blanco mostró incrementos significativos (p ≤ 0,05) en la conductividad eléctrica. En cuanto al crecimiento de plántulas, en poroto negro con cuatro golpes se observaron caídas significativas en la longitud y el peso fresco del vástago. Respecto de la valoración enzimática se evidenciaron mermas en la actividad de la a-amilasa asociadas a incrementos en los niveles de daño de la semilla, observándose que mientras en poroto blanco el deterioro promueve variaciones a nivel de cotiledones, en poroto negro el área crítica de esas modificaciones le correspondería al embrión. Los resultados indican que el daño mecánico promueve modificaciones diferenciales en la fisiología de la germinación de poroto blanco y de poroto negro y según el nivel de deterioro que presente la semilla.
