The treatment of seeds using growth regulators can overcome seed dormancy and increase the emergence and development of seedlings. The objective of this research was to evaluate the effect of different concentrations of GA 4+7 + N-(phenyl methyl)-aminopurine on the dormancy breaking of Passiflora cincinnata Mast. seeds recently harvested and stored for six years. The study was conducted in a greenhouse at Embrapa Cassava and Tropical Fruits, in completely randomized design, in a 2 x 4 factorial scheme, with the following factors: year of seed harvest (2010 and 2016) and the emergence promoter GA 4+7 + N-(phenyl methyl)-aminopurine at four concentrations (0%; 0.03%; 0.45% and 0.90%), with 4 replicates of 25 seeds. Emergence percentage, first count, emergence speed index, number of leaves, root length, stem diameter, dry matter of shoots, roots and total, and root/shoot ratio were evaluated. The results showed that GA 4+7 + N-(phenyl methyl)-aminopurine is recommended to overcome dormancy of Passiflora cincinnata in recently harvested seeds (2016) and increase the emergence of seedlings from seeds stored for six years in cold chamber (2010). The emergence promoter concentration of 0.03% can be used to overcome dormancy in recently harvested seeds and maintains the vigor of seeds stored for six years. Passiflora cincinnata seeds remain physiologically viable for six years and their emergence is potentiated by the use of GA 4+7 + N-(phenyl methyl)-aminopurine.

Viola x wittrockiana (Amor-Perfeito) é uma planta híbrida utilizada em ornamentação, na culinária e na indústria farmacêutica. Com o objetivo de analisar a influência do Ácido Giberélico (GA3) na germinação de sementes de Amor-Perfeito, realizou-se embebição em três concentrações desse ácido (5, 10 e 20 mg.L-1) por quatro períodos diferentes: 30, 60, 120 e 180 minutos. Após os tratamentos, as placas foram mantidas em Câmara de Germinação (B.O.D.), sob temperatura de 25 °C ± 2 e luz branca de lâmpadas fluorescentes a 116 µmol.m-2.s-1, com fotoperíodo de 12 h. O monitoramento foi diário e os dados obtidos foram utilizados para o cálculo da germinabilidade, índice de velocidade de germinação e tempo médio de germinação. O melhor tratamento para germinabilidade e tempo médio de germinação foi a concentração de 5 mg.L-1 durante 30 minutos de exposição e os melhores índices de velocidade de germinação foram obtidos com 180 minutos de exposição em todas as concentrações de GA3.

Germination pattern may be affected when seeds are dispersed under flooded conditions or subjected to pre-germination treatments such as immersion in plant growth regulators and priming. We evaluated the metabolic and ultrastructural changes in the seeds of Annona emarginata (Schltdl.) H. Rainer seeds caused by immersion in water (0 MPa) during the imbibition phase (phase I). The immersion time necessary for initially dry seeds (10% water content) to reach a water content of 15%, 20%, and 35% was recorded. The seeds were also immersed in a polyethylene glycol 6000 solution (–1.2 MPa) to decrease the rate of water uptake and increase the immersion times required for the seeds to reach the selected water contents. With shorter immersion times, seed damage did not decrease germinability. Seeds immersed for 122 h sustained damage to the cell membrane system and organelles, resulting in a decreased percentage and rate of germination. Decreasing the rate of water uptake increased the time required to finish imbibition phase to 317 h and resulted in more ultrastructural damages and a decreased germination index. We conclude that in seeds with slower imbibition, longer immersion times may cause severe metabolic damage if the seeds are immersed until the end of the imbibition phase, resulting in reduced germination.
