Seed deterioration is an irreversible process. However, techniques such as priming have been used after storage, in order to mitigate the harmful effects of aging. This study aimed to evaluate the physiological performance of A. urundeuva diaspores when stored and, subsequently, subjected to priming and drying, thus testing the hypothesis that hydropriming would mitigate deterioration. A completely randomized design was adopted, in a triple factorial scheme 2x4x4, considering two environments (laboratory and refrigerated chamber), four storage times (0, 45, 90, and 180 days), and four hydration times (0 h/dry diaspores, 5 h, 14 h 30 min, and 23 h 30 min). Emergence, speed index, and the number of days to 50% emergence were assessed, as well as length and dry mass of both shoot and root systems. The storage of A. urundeuva diaspores for 180 days leads to a reduction in their physiological performance, regardless of the environment. The hydropriming times are not effective in attenuating the harmful effects of deterioration. Nevertheless, hydropriming for 23 h 30 min provides a faster seedling establishment.

-Sesame (Sesamum indicum L.) is one of the oldest oilseed plants used by man, and has great economic potential due to the possibilities for its exploitation in both the domestic and international markets. The objective of this work was to monitor the viability of sesame seeds stored in different environments and packaging, with a view to their conservation. The seeds were packed into paper bags, multiwall paper, black polyethylene and PETE bottles, and stored for a period of 12 months in different environments: dry cold room (10 °C and 55% RH), natural environment (30-32 °C and 75% RH), refrigerator (4 °C and 38-43% RH) and freezer (-20 °C). Every three months the water content of the seeds was determined and germination, accelerated ageing, speed of emergence index, and seedling dry weight were evaluated. The experimental design employed was completely randomised, in a scheme of split-lots, with four replications. The results showed that sesame seeds remain viable for up to twelve months when stored in a dry cold room or refrigerator, regardless of the type of packaging used. In a natural environment, the seeds remain viable for up to six months in storage. Paper packaging is the most suitable for sesame seeds stored in a freezer for up to twelve months.Key words: Storage. Germination. Conservation.RESUMO -O gergelim (Sesamum indicum L.), é uma das plantas oleaginosas mais antigas e utilizadas pela humanidade, apresenta grande potencial econômico, devido às possibilidades de exploração tanto no mercado nacional como internacional. Objetivou-se com este trabalho monitorar a viabilidade das sementes de gergelim armazenadas em diferentes ambientes e embalagens visando a sua conservação. As sementes foram acondicionadas em embalagens de saco papel, papel multifoliado, polietileno preto e garrafa pet e armazenadas por um período de doze meses em diferentes ambientes: câmara fria e seca (10 °C e 55% UR), ambiente natural (30-32 °C e 75% UR), geladeira (4 °C e 38 a 43% UR) e freezer (-20 °C). A cada três meses as sementes foram submetidas às seguintes avaliações: determinação do teor de água, germinação, envelhecimento acelerado, índice de velocidade de emergência e massa da matéria seca das plântulas. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi o inteiramente casualizado, no esquema de parcelas subsubdivididas, com quatro repetições. Os resultados evidenciaram que as sementes de gergelim permanecem viáveis por até doze meses quando armazenadas em ambiente da câmara fria e seca e da geladeira, independente do tipo de embalagem utilizada. Em ambiente natural, as sementes permanecem viáveis por ate seis meses de armazenamento. Em ambiente do freezer, a embalagem de papel é a mais indicada para o acondicionamento das sementes de gergelim por até doze meses.

RESUMO:Myracrodruon urundeuva Fr. All. é uma espécie pertencente à família Anacardiaceae, cuja planta pode ser utilizada como medicinal, na indústria de curtimento de couro, na arborização de ruas e praças, produzindo madeira de grande resistência mecânica. Diante disso, o objetivo deste trabalho foi determinar as melhores condições e períodos de armazenamento para conservação da viabilidade e vigor das sementes de M. urundeuva. As embalagens utilizadas para acondicionamento das sementes foram sacos de papel Kraft, algodão e de polietileno transparente, bem como folhas de papel alumínio. Em seguida as sementes foram armazenadas em ambiente natural de laboratório (25 ± 2ºC), freezer (-20 ± 2ºC), câmara fria (8 ± 2ºC) e geladeira (6 ± 2ºC). Em intervalos pré-determinados (0, 30, 60, 90, 120, 150, 180, 210 e 240 dias) avaliouse o teor de água das sementes, porcentagem de emergência, índice de velocidade de emergência, comprimento e massa seca de plântulas. No ambiente de laboratório não houve conservação do vigor das sementes de M. urundeuva. A melhor condição para conservação de sementes de M. urundeuva foi obtida com o acondicionamento em sacos de papel Kraft, pano de algodão, plástico ou papel alumínio e manutenção em geladeira ou freezer, podendo também ser conservadas embaladas em papel ou alumínio, quando estocadas em câmara fria, por 240 dias. Alteração no vigor de sementes dessa espécie é primeiramente identificada pela redução da velocidade de emergência.Palavras-chave: aroeira-do-sertão, emergência, vigor, conservação, planta medicinal ABSTRACT: Storage of Myracrodruon urundeuva Fr. All. seeds in different packaging and environments. Myracrodruon urundeuva Fr. All. is a species belonging to the Anacardiaceae family, which can be utilized as a medicinal plant, or in the leather tanning industry, urban afforestation, and the production of wood with great mechanic resistance. The objective of this study was to determine the best conditions and storage periods for preserving the viability and vigor of M. urundeuva. Seeds conditioned in bags of Kraft paper, cotton, polyethylene or aluminum foil of mesh polyethylene were stored at room temperature (25 ± 2ºC), freezer (-20 ± 2ºC), cold (8 ± 2ºC) and refrigerator (6 ± 2ºC). At 30, 60, 90, 120, 150, 180, 210 and 240 days they were evaluated for seed moisture content, percentage of emergence, emergence speed index (ESI), seedling length and seedling dry matter. In the natural environment of the laboratory, there was no conservation of seed vigor M. urundeuva. The best M. urundeuva seed conservation condition was obtained with bags of Kraft paper, cotton, polyethylene or aluminum foil of mesh polyethylene in the refrigerator or freezer. M. urundeuva seeds can also be kept in paper bags or aluminum foil when stored in a refrigerated chamber, for 240 days. Seed vigor change in this species is initially identified by decrease in the speed emergence.
