BackgroundThis study aimed to investigate the local botanical knowledge of native food plants in three rural communities, located in the semiarid region of Paraíba State, Brazil, verifying possibilities of differences of knowledge among communities and between men and women.MethodsSemi-structured interviews about native plant knowledge and use were conducted with all householders in each community, totaling 117 informants. The species similarity among the communities of Pau D’Arco, Várzea Alegre, and Barroquinha was compared with Jaccard index, and the use value index (UVgeneral, UVcurrent, UVpotential) was used to determine the most important species. The Kruskal-Wallis test was used to compare the use values among communities and genders. The consensus factor among the informants was calculated according to the uses cited, and the Wilcoxon test was used to compare the use values between men and women.ResultsWe recorded 9 species belonging to 8 genera and 8 families in Várzea Alegre; 10 species, 9 genera, and 9 families in Barroquinha; and 7 species, 7 genera and 7 families in Pau D’Arco. Spondias tuberosa Arruda (Anacardiaceae) in Várzea Alegre, Spondias sp. (Anacardiaceae) in Barroquinha, and Ximenia americana L. (Olacaceae) in Pau D’Arco were the most prominent species. Preparation methods are slightly different in the three communities, and there is low similarity about species use among the communities. Regarding gender, the analysis of use value among the communities evidenced significant differences only for UVgeneral among women, specifically between Barroquinha and Pau D’Arco. For men and women within each community, there is a difference only for UVpotential in Barroquinha.ConclusionThis study showed that the residents of the three rural communities have limited knowledge of native food plants found in their communities, but they know where to find them, which parts they may use and how to consume them. The fact is that men know plants that are more distant from the residences and women know those that are next to them.

O fruto de noni (Morinda citrifolia L.) é consumido há milênios na medicina popular polinésia devido aos benefícios nutricionais e terapêuticos. O consumo de noni em outros países, incluindo o Brasil, cresceu vertiginosamente nos últimos anos em decorrência das atividades biológicas atribuídas a ingestão do suco da fruta, principalmente pela propriedade anticâncer. Contudo, a composição química da planta, que está relacionada com suas propriedades biológicas, é determinada pelo seu local de origem, e por influência do clima e do solo onde é cultivada. Neste sentido, este trabalho teve como objetivo analisar a polpa extraída de frutos maduros de noni cultivados em Maringá-PR. A análise da polpa in natura apresentou 89,16% ABSTRACT: Proximate composition, bioactive compounds and antioxidant activity of fruits of Morinda citrifolia L. (noni) cultivated in Paraná, Brazil. The noni fruit (Morinda citrifolia L.) has been consumed for millennia in the Polynesian folk medicine because of its nutritional and therapeutic benefits. The consumption of the noni fruit in other countries, including Brazil, has increased in recent years because of the biological activities attributed to the ingestion of noni juice, especially the anticancer effect. However, the chemical composition of the plant, which is related to its biological properties, is determined by its geographical origin and is influenced by climate and soil. Therefore, this study aimed to analyze the pulp extracted from noni fruit grown in Maringá, state of Paraná, Brazil. The fresh pulp analysis showed 89.16% of moisture, 0.75% of ash, 2.10% of protein, 2.19% of fat and 5.81% of carbohydrates. The bioactive compounds analyzed were anthocyanins (1.39 mg.100 g -1 pulp), yellow flavonoids (13.01 mg.100 g -1 pulp), carotenoids (0.45 mg.100 g -1 pulp) and vitamin C (12.16 mg.100 g -1 pulp). For the analysis of total phenols and antioxidant activity, different extracts were prepared. The highest total phenolic contents were found in the aqueous extract (1143.56 mg EAG.100 g -1 ), followed by the ethanol extract (966.96 mg EAG.100 g -1 ), methanol/acetone extract (820.88 mg EAG.100 g -1 ) and methanol extract (306.33 mg EAG.100 g -1 ). The results for the antioxidant capacity were determined by the EC 50 , which is concentration of extract required to reduce 50% of the DPPH radical. The best results for the antioxidant capacity were found in the methanol/ acetone extract (EC 50 of 25.18 mg.mL -1 ) and in the methanol extract (EC 50 of 25.96 mg.mL -1 ). The antioxidant activity of the fruit may be related to its vitamin C content, since the extracts with lower total phenolic content were those that had lower EC 50 values.

RESUMO -A umbugueleira produz frutos com amplas possibilidades de utilização que, embora subexplorados, têm grande potencial socioeconômico. Dessa forma, o objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar o desenvolvimento e a fisiologia da maturação em frutos da umbugueleira. As inflorescências foram marcadas em seis plantas, no período da antese, e o fruto (umbuguela) foi avaliado em intervalos regulares até a abscisão da planta. O ciclo de desenvolvimento da umbuguela, da antese até o início da abscisão, abrange 157 dias; a massa, o volume, o comprimento e o diâmetro apresentam aumentos rápidos até 117 dias após a antese (DAA), estabilizando-se até o final da maturação. O padrão respiratório do fruto foi climatérico, com pico aos 147 DAA. A coloração evoluiu do verde para o amarelo e, no pós-climatério, para o vermelho-púrpura. A relação SS/AT e pH aumentaram, e a AT diminuiu durante a maturação. O ponto ideal de colheita para o armazenamento ocorreu dos 127 aos 137 DAA, com início da coloração amarela a amarelo predominante. Para consumo fresco, o ponto de colheita foi a partir de 147 DAA (amarelo com traços avermelhados). Termos para indexação: qualidade, taxa respiratória, maturação, ponto de colheita. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the development and the physiology of maturation of fruits of the umbuguela tree. The inflorescences were tagged in six plants at the anthesis period and the umbuguela fruit evaluated at regular intervals until the onset of fruit abscission. The cycle of development of the umbuguela fruit, from anthesis until abscission, covers 157 days; fruit mass, volume, length, and diameter showed rapid growth up to 117 days after anthesis (DAA), stabilizing until the end of maturation. The respiratory pattern of the fruit was climacteric, with peak at 147 DAA. The coloration advanced from green to yellow and, at the post-climacteric, to purple red. The SS/TA ratio and pH increased, and the TA decreased during maturation. The ideal harvest point for storage was from 127 to 137 DAA, at the beginning of the yellow to predominant yellow coloration. For fresh consumption, the ideal harvest point was from 147 DAA (yellow with reddish tones).
