In vitro anti-inflammatory, cytotoxic and antioxidant activities of boesenbergin A, a chalcone isolated from Boesenbergia rotunda (L.) (fingerroot)

Abstract: The current in vitro study was designed to investigate the anti-inflammatory, cytotoxic and antioxidant activities of boesenbergin A (BA), a chalcone derivative of known structure isolated from Boesenbergia rotunda. Human hepatocellular carcinoma (HepG2), colon adenocarcinoma (HT-29), non-small cell lung cancer (A549), prostate adenocarcinoma (PC3), and normal hepatic cells (WRL-68) were used to evaluate the cytotoxicity of BA using the MTT assay. The antioxidant activity of BA was assessed by the ORAC assay a… Show more

“…Boesenbergin A, from B. rotunda, exhibited cytotoxicity on non-small cell lung cancer (A549), prostate adenocarcinoma (PC3), human hepatocellular carcinoma (HepG2), colon adenocarcinoma (HT-29) and normal hepatic cells (WRL-68) with IC 50 of 20. 22, 10.69, 20.31, 94.10 and 9.324 μg/mL (Isa et al 2012 ).…”

“…B. rotunda ethanolic extract exhibited antioxidant activity as evaluated by the ferric reducing/antioxidant power (FRAP) and DPPH free radical scavenging activity (Jitvaropas et al 2012 ). Boesenbergin A, from B. rotunda, exhibited considerable antioxidant activity, when the results of ORAC assay were reported as Trolox equivalents (Isa et al 2012 ). Boesenbergin A (20 μg/mL) and quercetin (5 μg/mL) were equivalent to a Trolox concentration of 11.91 and 160.32 μM.…”

“…So soll der Schwarze Fingerwurz die Immunität stimulieren, Entzündungen bekämpfen und kanzerogenen Entwicklungen vorbeugen [15]. Immerhin scheint das Rhizom bei Magen- und Darmbeschwerden, Blähungen und Darmpilzen gute Dienste zu leisten.…”

“…13 ORAC assay has also been tested on the rhizomes which reported high antioxidant activity. 14 In 2004, Apak et al successfully employed cupric ion reducing antioxidant capacity (CUPRAC) chromophore called the Cu(I)-neocuproine (Nc) chelate which formed when undergoing redox reaction with antioxidant to evaluate antiradical activity in plant extracts. This electron-transfer based assay measures the capacity of antioxidant in reduction of an oxidant which is substantiated by colour change.…”
