Influence of eNOS gene polymorphism on cardiometabolic parameters in response to physical training in postmenopausal women

Abstract: The health-promoting effects of exercise training (ET) are related to nitric oxide (NO) production and/or its bioavailability. The objective of this study was to determine whether single nucleotide polymorphism of the endothelial NO synthase (eNOS) gene at positions -786T>C, G894T (Glu298Asp) and at the variable number of tandem repeat (VNTR) Intron 4b/a would interfere with the cardiometabolic responses of postmenopausal women submitted to physical training. Forty-nine postmenopausal women were trained in ses… Show more

“…This suggests that the presence of the C allele enhances the beneficial effect of leisure-time physical activity on serum triglyceride levels. An intervention study showed that the presence of the C allele did not affect the beneficial effect of exercise in reducing serum triglyceride levels among postmenopausal women (n = 49) [19], but the sex difference of this effect was unclear in the current study.…”

“…A genetic study conducted by Esposti et al 25 endeavored to determine whether a single nucleotide polymorphism of the endothelial NO synthase (eNOS) gene at positions -786T>C, G894T (Glu298Asp) and at the variable number of tandem repeat Intron 4b/a would interfere with the cardiometabolic responses of trained postmenopausal women. Blood pressure was reduced after training, which was genotype-independent, but women without the studied eNOS gene polymorphism and Intron 4b/a (bb genotype) presented a better reduction of total cholesterol levels in response to training compared to those who carried the mutant allele.…”
