Effects of chronic treadmill training on body mass gain and visceral fat accumulation in overfed rats

Abstract: This study evaluated the effects of chronic treadmill training on body mass gain and visceral fat accumulation in overfed rats. Overfeeding was induced by reducing the litter size to 3 male pups per mother during the suckling period. The litter size of control rats was adjusted to 10 male pups per mother. Seven weeks after birth overfed and normally fed rats were selected and assigned to a sedentary protocol or to a low-intensity treadmill training protocol (60 min, 5 times/week, for 9 weeks). Four groups (ove… Show more

“…Similar modifications in fat mass were described previously (Dantas et al 2010) in animals exposed to overfeeding after treadmill training for 60 min/day, 5 days a week. Scomparin et al (2006) reported that mice that were previously treated with monosodium glutamate (MSG) during the neonatal period had lower levels of visceral fat after shorter sessions of swimming training (15 min/day, 3 days a week), suggesting that the beneficial effects of chronic exercise could be achieved with lower training parameters.…”

“…On the other hand, caloric expenditure during ET and the positive chronic influence of an exercise training protocol on body composition, mainly, by decreasing of adipose content are well established. Some authors have shown that aerobic training was effective to decrease adipose tissue area and total adiposity in rats (Friedman, 2009;Haram et al 2009;Dantas et al 2010;Machado et al 2014;Rinaldi et al 2014). From the period that ET was include on our experimental protocol, the caloric value of high-fat diet was nullified, whereas, ObET rats showed lipid profile similar to C and ET rats at the end of experiment.…”

“…Mild physical training on the treadmill during pregnancy did not interfere with bone development and growth of the offspring. Dantas et al 32 evaluated the effects of chronic treadmill training on body mass gain and visceral fat accumulation in overfed newly born rats. Overfeeding was induced by reducing the litter size to 3 male pups per mother during suckling, while control litter size was adjusted to 10 male pups per mother.…”
