The polymorphism of the serotonin-2A receptor T102C is associated with age

Abstract: Epidemiological investigations suggest that T102C polymorphism of gene 5-HT2A may be associated with mean life span because diseases and behaviors related to this polymorphism, such as schizophrenia, suicide, aggression, and addiction, may potentially shorten mean life span. A sample of 687 individuals without previous neuropsychiatric disease was genotyped and separated into 3 groups according to their gender and age: 14-45 years old, 46-64 years old and 65-100 years old. Molecular genotyping was performed us… Show more

“…Nonetheless, in one study conducted to investigate the association between HTR2A 102C/T polymorphism and depression with seasonal patterns, it was found that the seasonal pattern was 7.57 times more frequent in 102C allele carriers than in 102T homozygous carriers [ 27 ]. Furthermore, the C allele of the HTR2A 102C/T polymorphism was shown to be associated with neuropsychiatric diseases, even though this finding is controversial [ 41 ]. The 102C/T polymorphism of the HTR2A gene does not result in changes in the amino acid sequence of the receptor protein.…”

“…A previous study on humans showed a linear loss of receptor 5-HT2A of about 16 and 18% per decade of life in the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex, respectively [26]. The expression of the 5-HT2A receptor decreases dramatically in many brain regions after the age of 50 [27]. Currently, little is known about genetic polymorphisms associated to mean life span.…”

“…Particularly, I dedicated a large part of my research to identify and to evaluate the action of genes with SNPs included in this second category including studies of T102C SNP of 5-HT2A serotonin receptor; Apolipoprotein E SNP and Ala16Val SNP located in the superoxide dismutase manganese dependent enzyme gene (SOD2 or MnSOD). [34][35][36][37][38][39][40][41] Specially Ala16Val-SOD2 gene that is produces an antioxidant enzyme that acts into mitochondria has being focus of my studies. SOD2 represents the major defense against reactive oxygen species (ROS) within the mitochondria, a cellular compartment where there is a continuous production of superoxide anion by the electron transport chain.…”
