Effect of melatonin administration on subjective sleep quality in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

Abstract: Disturbed sleep is common in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Conventional hypnotics worsen nocturnal hypoxemia and, in severe cases, can lead to respiratory failure. Exogenous melatonin has somnogenic properties in normal subjects and can improve sleep in several clinical conditions. This randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study was carried out to determine the effects of melatonin on sleep in COPD. Thirty consecutive patients with moderate to very severe COPD were initially recruited f… Show more

“…61 Melatonin can also improve sleep quality in COPD. 69 Use of the MT(1)/MT(2) melatonin receptor agonist ramelteon 8 mg for one night in 25 subjects (≥ 40 years) with moderate to severe COPD resulted in a significant increase in total sleep and sleep efficiency without causing respiratory depression or worse hypoxemia. 70 The likelihood of cognitive impairment and abuse liability is also lower than that with benzodiazepine receptor agonists.…”

“…(16,(24)(25)(26)(27)(28) Anxiolytic and antidepressant effects of melatonin are associated with its biorythmological and normalizing effects on sleep and on the level of endogenous peptides. Melatonin is not only a unique synchronizer of endogenous biological rhythms, but also to a certain extent is a tranquilizer.…”

“…3 мг в сутки мелатонина наблюдалось незначительное снижение количества спермы у здо ровых мужчин. Таким образом, необходимы даль нейшие долгосрочные исследования с участием большего числа пациентов с целью создания реко мендаций по безопасному применению мелатонина с целью коррекции нарушения сна и дыхательной функции у больных ХОБЛ [47][48].…”
