The importance of accurate anatomic assessment for the volumetric analysis of the amygdala

Abstract: There is a wide range of values reported in volumetric studies of the amygdala. The use of single plane thick magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) may prevent the correct visualization of anatomic landmarks and yield imprecise results. To assess whether there is a difference between volumetric analysis of the amygdala performed with single plane MRI 3-mm slices and with multiplanar analysis of MRI 1-mm slices, we studied healthy subjects and patients with temporal lobe epilepsy. We performed manual delineation of … Show more

“…Coronal T1-IR (3 mm thick, flip angle 120˚, repetition time 6800 ms, echo time 129 ms, matrix 2526328, field of view 21623 cm) images were analysed using anatomical guidelines obtained from a standardised protocol 33 for manual segmentations of hippocampal and total brain volumes (fig 1). Quantification and analysis were carried out by one investigator (ADC) blind to the patients' clinical data.…”

“…Anatomical guidelines for outlining the hippocampus followed a specific protocol previously described. 6,31 Once the outline had been defined, the slice area was calculated automatically by the computer program. We then calculated the total volumes (mm 3 ) as the sum of each area multiplied by the slice thickness.…”
