Hunting for differentially expressed genes

Abstract: Differentially expressed genes are usually identified by comparing steady-state mRNA concentrations. Several methods have been used for this purpose, including differential hybridization, cDNA subtraction, differential display and, more recently, DNA chips. Subtractive hybridization has significantly improved after the polymerase chain reaction was incorporated into the original method and many new protocols have been established. Recently, the availability of the wellknown coding sequences for some organisms … Show more

“…Several methods have been developed for detection of differentially expressed genes, namely subtractive hybridization, differential display, and microarrays (reviewed in [7,8]). Differential display (DD) reverse-transcription (RT) polymerase chain reaction (PCR) [9] has been used successfully for characterization of host response to bacteria or bacterial components [10][11][12][13][14].…”

“…Throughout the years, a number of techniques have been developed to isolate DNA sequences coding for growth-related genes (1). Most methods yield partial cDNA sequences, thus requiring a search for complete coding sequences.…”

“…Genes up-or downregulated in response to JH during the Melipona development are still to be identified. The identification of differentially expressed genes has been used to understand the function of genes and the basic molecular mechanisms of distinct biological processes (Vedoy et al 1999). Differential display reverse transcriptase -polymerase chain reaction (DDRT-PCR) has innovated the gene expression field (Liang and Pardee 1992).…”
