Distribution of calcium-binding proteins in the chick visual system

Abstract: The calcium-binding proteins calbindin (CB), calretinin (CR), and parvalbumin (PV) have been extensively studied over the last decade since they appear to be important as buffers of intracellular calcium. In the present study we investigated the distribution of these proteins in the chick visual system by means of conventional immunocytochemistry. The results indicated that CB, CR, and PV are widely distributed in retinorecipient areas of the chick brain. In some regions, all three calcium-binding proteins wer… Show more

“…1C shows a section through the LM immunoreacted for PV. Consistent with previous reports (Pfeiffer & Britto, 1997;Heyers et al, 2008), PV was strongly expressed in neurons in nRt, triangularis (T), subpretectalis, and the optic tectum. Expression in the LM was not as intense, but numerous PV+ve cell bodies were present in LMl, as shown in the inset (Fig.…”

“…The restricted expression of the calcium-binding proteins in neuronal populations in the central nervous system has been described in several species (e.g., Celio, 1990;Van Brederode et al, 1990;Resibois & Rogers, 1992;Pfeiffer & Britto, 1997;Pritz & Siadati, 1999). Calcium-binding proteins have numerous cellular functions (e.g., Kohr et al, 1991;Yamaguchi et al, 1991;Baimbridge et al, 1992;Schwaller et al, 2002;Schwaller, 2007Schwaller, , 2009), although their role from a systems perspective is not well understood.…”

“…in S-100a and S-100b)”. In the current study, immunohistochemistry for this antibody reveals comparable staining patterns of parvalbumin in the chick brain as previously reported (Pfeiffer and Britto, 1997; Panicker et al, 2002; Wang et al, 2006). …”

“…All three calcium-binding proteins are known to be widely distributed in various subregions of mammalian amygdala (Pitkanen and Kemppainen 2002). The presence of calcium binding proteins has been typically exploited for the identification of functionally distinct neuronal subsets also in the avian brain (Gati et al 2014; Husband and Shimizu 2011; Pfeiffer and Britto 1997; Roberts et al 2002; Suarez et al 2006). The arcopallium harbors subsets of parvalbumin + , calbindin + and calretinin + neurons (Cornez et al 2015; Roberts et al 2002).…”
