Expression of calcium-binding proteins in cerebellar- and inferior olivary-projecting neurons in the nucleus lentiformis mesencephali of pigeons

Abstract: In the avian brain, the optokinetic response is controlled by two retinal-recipient nuclei: the nucleus of the basal optic root (nBOR) of the accessory optic system and the pretectal nucleus lentiformis mesencephali (LM). Although considered sister nuclei because of their similar response properties and function, there are both similarities and differences with respect to efferent projections and neurochemistry. Both nBOR and LM project to the cerebellum (Cb) directly as mossy fibers but also indirectly via th… Show more

“…Another tool we used to distinguish the layers in the pretectal region was calretinin (CR) expression. Previously, we have shown in pigeons that the LMm appears continuous with the internal layer of Glv, with light staining in the neuropil (Iwaniuk et al, ; Pakan et al, ). In both LMm and LMl, large multipolar neurons are CR immunopositive (CR+) (Gamlin & Cohen, ; Iwaniuk et al, ).…”

In both LMm and LMl, large multipolar neurons are CR immunopositive (CR+) (Gamlin & Cohen, ; Iwaniuk et al, ). Additionally, we have shown that the projection from the LM to the cerebellum arises from large multipolar neurons, half of which are CR+ (Iwaniuk et al, ).…”
