ÔJalo VermelhoÕ is a large seeded Andean landrace of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) that constitutes an important source of anthracnose resistance, disease caused by Colletotrichum lindemuthianum. This landrace has different resistance spectrum, when compared with cultivars of Andean origin, indicating the presence of an anthracnose-resistant gene different from Co-1 locus. This anthracnose resistance was characterized by inheritance and allelism tests were carried out on the following genes: Co-1, Co-1 2 , Co-1 3 , Co-1 5 , Co-2, Co-3, Co-4, Co-5, Co-6, Co-7, Co-9, Co-10, Co-11 and Co-13. Resistance to races 23, 55, 89 and 453 in ÔJalo VermelhoÕ was conditioned by a single dominant gene. Allelism tests in F 2 populations demonstrated that ÔJalo VermelhoÕ carries a dominant gene located at a distinct locus, differing from previously characterized genes. Based on its independence from previously described loci, the authors propose that the ÔJalo VermelhoÕs gene should be named Co-12. This new gene is a valuable source of resistance to anthracnose which can be transferred to commercial cultivars to enhance the effectiveness of resistance gene pyramiding in bean breeding programmes.

Anthracnose, caused by Colletotrichum lindemuthianum, is a major disease of dry bean and results great yield losses. The objective of this work was to characterize the anthracnose resistance gene present in the Andean cultivar ÔPitangaÕ. This cultivar was crossed with the cultivars Michelite, Michigan Dark Red Kidney, Cornell 49-242, Mexico 222, PI 207262, TU, AB 136, G 2333, BAT 93, SEL 1308, H1 line, Ouro Negro, Jalo Vermelho and Jalo Listras Pretas to obtain F 1 and F 2 populations. These populations were then inoculated with races 23, 64, 65, 73 and 2047 of C. lindemuthianum. The segregation ratio was 3 resistant : 1 susceptible, which shows that resistance inheritance is controlled by a single dominant gene. The results from allelism tests in fourteen F 2 populations fit a 15 resistant : 1 susceptible ratio, which indicates that the resistance present in the ÔPitangaÕ cultivar is dominant and independent from genes and alleles already characterized: Co-1, Co-2, Co-3, Co-4 2 , Co-5, Co-6, Co-7, Co-9, Co-10, Co-11, Co-12 and Co-13. The authors suggest the symbol Co-14 to represent the gene present in the ÔPitangaÕ cultivar.

Genetic analysis of anthracnose resistance in common bean breeding source germplasm

Anthracnose is a serious disease affecting dry bean production especially in the cool highland areas worldwide. The objective of this research was to study the inheritance of anthracnose resistance in market-class dry beans. A complete diallel set of crosses was generated from nine diverse parents comprising six resistant and three susceptible to anthracnose. The F 1 and F 2 crosses and parents were artificially inoculated with Colletotriclum lindenumthianum Race-767 in a growth room. There was significant variation for anthracnose resistance among genotypes. General combining ability (GCA) and specific combining ability effects were significant for resistance, indicating importance of both additive and non-additive effects, respectively. Preponderance of GCA effects (66%) suggested that additive effects were more important than non-additive effects (24%), which were also reflected by high heritability estimates (70%), and suggested that simple selection or backcrossing would be useful for improving the resistance in market class varieties. The study was not conclusive on whether epistatic gene action played a major role, but if available it might have biased the dominance gene effects. Reciprocal effects (10%) were not significant (P [ 0.05), suggesting that cytoplasmic genes did not play a major role in modifying anthracnose resistance. Parental lines G2333, AB136, NAT002, and NAT003 showed highly negative GCA effects qualifying them as suitable parents for transferring resistance genes to their progenies. A few major genes, 1-3, displaying partial dominance conditioned anthracnose resistance, suggesting a possibility of using marker-assisted selection to improve anthracnose resistance in market-class dry beans.
