Cattleya coccinea and C. brevipedunculata (Orchidaceae) are closely related species distinguished primarily by geographical distribution, vegetative morphology and flowering period. Both species inhabit high‐elevation regions in south‐eastern Brazil, but are traditionally associated with different habitats, located in cloudy forests and campos rupestres (rocky fields), respectively. We used morphometrics and genetic variation of microsatellite markers to test the occurrence of a hybrid zone between these species located in Parque Estadual do Ibitipoca (PEI), Brazil. Morphological data reveal a continuum of variation between the putative taxa, influenced mainly by characters of leaf, pseudobulb and peduncle. However, genetic data do not support the occurrence of hybridization and introgression in PEI, showing that it is a pure population of C. brevipedunculata. Differences in vegetative characters among individuals from cloudy forests and campos rupestres suggest that morphological variation may be related to phenotypic plasticity in response to environmental light fluctuations, an unknown situation for this species. These results highlight the inconsistency of morphology for the identification of hybrids and the role of vegetative characters as a possible complicating factor for the taxonomy of these species, as they are subject to environmental influence.

We provide a molecular phylogenetic analysis of the Laelia alliance based on sampling of 20 of an estimated 24 species, and seven plastid regions plus nrITS 1 & 2 analyzed using maximum parsimony, maximum likelihood, and Bayesian inference. Furthermore, we used coded indels to evaluate their effect on the phylogenetic relationships and/or support values (bootstrap and posterior probabilities). Our results confirm the existence of two clades, the long known Laelia (endemic to México at middle to high elevations) and Schomburgkia (a more widely distributed taxon). Both clades were strongly supported by PP values and moderate BS; thus, we preferred to recognize them as separate genera with a reappraised morphology and taxonomic delimitation. The inclusion of coded indels in the analyses was of great utility; we could identify the probable hybrid origin of L. gouldiana and L. halbingeriana. We propose new combinations to accommodate the taxonomic changes resulting from our study. We transfer L. anceps subsp. anceps, L. anceps subsp. dawsonii, L. aurea, L. mottae, and L. rubescens to Schomburgkia, with the second taxon elevated to species level; the molecular evidence together with previous published work on the morphology, phenology and geography of the group support these decisions. Lastly, the recently described genus Encabarcenia is considered as a synonym of Schomburgkia and, as a result, a new combination is proposed.

-(The Orchidaceae of "Parque Municipal de Mucugê", Bahia, Brazil). This study presents a survey of the Orchidaceae occurring in the "Parque Municipal de Mucugê, Mucugê", Bahia, Brazil. It was carried out trough monthly sampling during 12 months. Thirty five species of orchids were recorded in 22 genera, of which 18 species are for the first time reported for Mucugê, eight for the Chapada Diamantina and four for the state of Bahia. The main genera in number of species are Bulbophyllum, Epidendrum, Octomeria and Prescottia. Lectotypes for Acianthera hamosa (Bard. Rodr.) Pridgeon & M.W. Chase, Cattleya elongata Bard. Rodr., Maxillaria cerifera Bard. Rodr., and Prescottia montana Bard. Rodr. are chosen here. All taxa are described and illustrated, as well as identification keys for species and genera are provided.
