Abstract: -(Reproductive biology of two species of Jatropha L. (Euphorbiaceae) in "Caatinga", northeastern Brazil). The phenology, pollination and breeding system of Jatropha mutabilis (Pohl) Baill. and J. mollissima (Pohl) Baill. were studied in the municipalities of Buíque (8°67' S and 37°01' W) and Arcoverde (8°25' S and 37°02' W), both in the Caatinga, Pernambuco state. Twenty individuals of each species were tagged for phenological observations, and the study of floral biology, reproductive system, as well as the f… Show more

“…Furthermore, beekeepers already know that honey bees forage on "angicos" (Anadenanthera, Piptadenia, Parapiptadenia) (P.G.Rubert personal communication), once they eventually observe them in the fi eld. Santos et al (2005) point out that the pollination of species of the Jatropha genus (Jatropha mutabilis and Jatropha molissima) can be done effectively and occasionally by Apis mellifera and that not only pollen but also nectar is collected. These species like many Euphorbiaceae necessarily need biotic vectors for pollination since the fl owers are unisexual, and thus, regarding the importance of Jatropha species as oil producers, it is interesting to learn which species are the most effective pollinators so that management can be better exploited.…”

“…Moreover, the species studied were also classified according to seed dispersal syndrome (Table 1), following van der Pilj (1982) classification, in zoochorous, when the dispersal is done by animals; anemochorous, when the dispersion is carried by the wind; and autochorous, when the dispersion occurs by explosive dehiscence or gravity. The species classification was made according to information on the biology of the species found in literature (Briton & Rose 1963;Maia 2004;Barbosa 2005;Barbosa et al 2005;Santos et al 2005;Pereira et al 2008;Moreira et al 2009;Silva & Rodal 2009;Stefanello et al 2009;Maragon et al 2010), expert consultation and increased knowledge of the authors. This classification was intended to detect patterns related to reproductive strategies of species.…”
