Aim We record new occurrences of the invasive species Ceratium furcoides in reservoirs and their affluents in the Paraná River basin, State of Goiás (GO), central-western Brazil, and in some localities in the São Francisco River basin, northeastern region. Methods Qualitative and quantitative phytoplankton samples were collected from Corumbá Reservoir and Cascatinha Falls, Caldas Novas, GO, and João Leite Reservoir, Goiânia, GO, both in the Paraná River basin, and samples from the São Franscisco River basin. Specimens of C. furcoides were observed with optical, epifluorescence and scanning electron microscopy. Results The individuals of C. furcoides from these environments agreed morphologically with populations in other reservoirs in Brazil and other locations, especially concerning the tabulation and the shape of the fourth apical plate. These environments ranged from oligotrophic to eutrophic conditions. Physical and chemical variables of these waterbodies, compared to other environments where this species was found, demonstrate that C. furcoides is a highly eurytopic species. The dispersal pattern of C. furcoides seems to be more complex than upstream-downstream regulation, since the species occurs in high-altitude environments and systems upstream from previously recorded locations. Conclusion An analysis based on the areas of occurrence and the chronology of the records demonstrated that C. furcoides has spread toward northern Brazil. Studies of the relationships among populations recorded in other parts of Brazil and South America are required in order to develop accurate models of dispersal for this invasive species, and will facilitate the development of management policies for aquatic systems in Brazil.

O. Berg] cultivated in pots. The aim of this trial was to evaluate the initial development of Campomanesia adamantium grown under different phosphorus and nitrogen rates. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse at the Universidade Federal da Grande Dourados, Dourados-MS. It was studied five phosphorus rates (20, 120, 200, 280 and 380 kg ha -1 ) in the form of superphosphate and five nitrogen rates (6, 36, 60, 84 and 114 kg ha -1 ) in the form of ammonium sulfate. Treatments were defined using the Plan Puebla experimental matrix, resulting in nine combinations, respectively, of phosphorus and nitrogen (kg ha -1 ): 280 and 84, 280 and 36, 120 and 6, 120 and 36, 120 and 84, 200 and 60, 380 and 84, 20 and 36 and 280 and 114. The experimental design was randomized block with four replications. Experimental unit consisted of five vessels, with one plant per pot. The trial harvest was carried out 270 days after transplanting (DAT). Highest rates of N and P resulted on the greatest plant height (38.12 cm) reached after 261 DAT, maximum number of leaves per plant (54) at 186 DAT, highest dry weight of leaves (13.99 and 5.68 g plant -1 ) and root (15.9 and 6.2 g plant -1 ), greatest leaf area (610 cm 2 plant -1 ) and number of branches (3 planta -1 ), all at 270 DAT. The average of Chlorophyll levels was 36 ICF. T...
We present data on the pollen harvest by Apis mellifera L. at a central-western Brazil site not yet studied. Corbiculae pollen loads were collected during one year in front of the hive, acetolysed and slides mounted for optical microscopy. Identifi cation followed comparisons with a local pollen collection. Forty-two pollen types were utilized by the bee; the most important families were Myrtaceae, Asteraceae, Euphorbiaceae, Brassicaceae and Poaceae. The genus/species level ranking of relative importance showed Eucalyptus (19%), Raphanus raphanistrum (13%), Poaceae type 2 (7.5%), Jatropha cf. gossypiifolia (7%) and Sapium glandulatum (6.5%). Overall, the majority of pollen types (80%) were not abundantly harvested, and a minority (4%) reached values of 10%. Given that the study area has cultivated plants and not natural vegetation, we indicate most of the identifi ed species as manageable and point out that weedy vegetation can be an important food source for bees since it frequently occurred in the pollen spectra even within a totally cultivated area.
ABSTRACT. The aim of this experiment was to evaluate the biomass yield and chemical composition of the essential oil of clove basil in response to doses of broiler litter (0, 5, 10, 15 and 20 t ha -1 ) added in presence of triple superphosphate (200 kg ha -1 ) or without it. Before the first harvest, the height of the plants increased significantly (34.42 cm) when 15 tonnes ha -1 broiler litter were added to the soil. However, after resprouting, the plant heights ranged only as a function of the vegetative cycle, with maximum height (76.0 cm) observed at 60 days. Phosphate fertilization also significantly influenced the leaf area (1.771 cm 2 plant -1 ) during the first harvest. The fresh weight of leaves increased linearly in response to the addition of broiler litter (20 ton ha -1 ) with maximum yields of 1,709 and 7,140 kg ha -1 during the first harvest and regrowth, respectively. On average, the oil content of the leaves was 0.7%, with maximum performance (3.8 L ha -1 ) when 20 tonnes ha -1 of broiler litter were added on the soil. Eugenol was found to be the major compound of the essential oil (71.65%).Key words: clove basil, chemical composition, medicinal plant, organic residue, triple superphosphate.RESUMO.
