Duas novas espécies de Calliandra Benth.: (Leguminosae - Mimosoideae) da Chapada Diamantina, Bahia, Brasil

Abstract: -(Two new species of Calliandra Benth. (Leguminosae-Mimosoideae) from the Chapada Diamantina, Bahia, Brazil). Two new species of Calliandra are described from the Chapada Diamantina, state of Bahia, eastern Brazil. Calliandra geraisensis E.R. Souza & L.P. Queiroz is related to C. calycina Benth. but it differs in its depauperate habit, distichous leaves and absence of glandular trichomes on the perianth. Calliandra imbricata E.R. Souza & L.P. Queiroz is a shrubby plant similar to C. erubescens Renvoize from wh… Show more

“…One important aspect of this endemism in the Chapada Diamantina is that it is not distributed uniformly among the infrageneric groups of Calliandra (Souza, 2001). Of the 36 species of Calliandra restricted to the Chapada, one belongs to the Androcallis clade (C. pilgerana Harms) and 35 to the Monticola clade.…”

“…In more recent phylogenetic studies (Brown & al., 2008) based on the nuclear ITS and ETS regions, Calliandra appeared in an unresolved position (in the ITS and combined ITS + ETS data) or as sister group to Zapoteca (in the ETS analysis). Lewis & Rico-Arce (2005) included Calliandra in the "Inga Alliance" of Barneby & Grimes (1996) (Barneby, 1998;Souza & Queiroz, 2004;Hernández, 2008;Souza, 2010). All of these centers of diversity occur in areas with strong climatic seasonality.…”

“…This study is the first to involve populations from the Chapada Diamantina with an east/west disjunction, the municipalities of Rio de Contas and Abaíra (Catolés is a district of the latter) being situated on the western side of the Cadeia do Espinhaço, with Mucugê located in the east. These three localities are characterized by their floristic richness, with a large number of endemic species (Harley & Simmons, 1986; Stannard, 1995; Menezes & Giulietti, 2000; Zappi et al ., 2000; Souza, 2001).…”

“…Pollen from 21 species of the genus Calliandra has been studied (Appendix I); only one collection of each species has been examined because of the scarcity of specimens with polliniferous material (especially flower buds). The species were selected following the taxonomic work of Souza (2001) relating to Calliandra species which occur in Catolés, Bahia, Brazil. However, it was not possible to obtain a sample of C. harrisii from this locality, therefore a specimen from São Paulo was substituted.…”

“…There are 51 species of Calliandra in north-east Brazil (Lewis, 2006), most of which (44) to be found in the state of Bahia (Lewis, 1987). Species from Bahia are specially found along the Chapada Diamantina mountain range, where some are endemic (Barneby, 1998;Souza, 2001).…”
