Use of Herbicides in Sugarcane in the São Paulo State

Abstract: Sugarcane is one of the main agricultural cultivations of Brazil, and one of the crops in which herbicides are most applied. In the 2017/2018 season, the estimated sugarcane production was 694.54 million tons, with an estimated increase of 0.9% in yield for this season. In order to evaluate the use of herbicides in this crop in the São Paulo State during a five-year period, a survey was carried out with sugarcane farmers. The use of herbicides applied alone and in a formulated mixture, according to their mecha… Show more

“…Diversos herbicidas são registrados para essa cultura, com uma ampla gama de mecanismos de ação, grupos químicos e princípios ativos (Tabela 2). Além dos herbicidas comercializados com um único princípio ativo na fórmula, existem ainda as opções de misturas de herbicidas formulados dupla e triplamente (Reis et al, 2019).…”

“…Weed control can be carried out correctly by the integration of several methods, including the use of herbicides. Between 2010 and 2014, almost 100% of the area cultivated with sugarcane in the state of São Paulo was treated with herbicides (Reis et al 2019). This can be explained by the need for long-term weed control, where the application of herbicides with lasting residual action is essential.…”

“…There are currently many options of registered herbicides for sugarcane (Rodrigues and Almeida 2018). Carotenoid biosynthesis inhibiting herbicides are strongly recommended for the control of monocot species in sugarcane (Reis et al 2019). Among these is clomazone (2-(2-chlorobenzyl)-4,4-dimethyl-1,2oxazolidin-3-one) from the isoxazolidinone group of chemicals, used in the preemergent control of Poaceae species and some eudicots in sugarcane (Rodrigues and Almeida 2018).…”

“…How the use of herbicides for grasses is important for raw cane production system [15]; the use of different formulations or combinations containing clomazone is important, especially when it is necessary to increase the spectrum of weed control [16]. Alternatively, the microencapsulated formulation of clomazone has been recommended for sugarcane crops and can be an alternative to emulsifiable concentrate formulations, due to the lower potential for volatilization and better control performance under less suitable application conditions [17][18][19][20].…”

“…The combination of herbicides of different action mechanisms and with different characteristics from clomazone, it is also common for sugarcane crops [16], and sulfentrazone ([N-[2.4-dicloro-5-[difluorometil)-4.5-dihidro-3-metil-5-oxo-1H-1.2,4-triazol-1-il]methanesulfonamide) is one of the main herbicides used in combination with clomazone. Sulfentrazone is a weak acid (pKa 6.56) that has solubility in water of 780 mg L −1 in pH 7 at 25 • C, coefficient of octanol-water partition of 9.8 (pH 7), and vapor pressure of 1.30 × 10 −4 Pa at 25 • C [9].…”
