Weed Seed Bank in an Agroforestry System With Eucalyptus in Subtropical Brazil

Abstract: : Trees can modify the weed seed bank composition and distribution in the cropped area of an agroforestry system. This study aimed at analyzing the eucalyptus (Eucalyptus dunnii) effect on spatial distribution, functional traits abundance and weed seed bank botanic composition in an agroforestry system under no-tillage in Subtropical Brazil. The experiment was conducted in a randomized block design with five replications, and five positions between 4.5-year-old eucalyptus double rows [(4x3) x 20 m] as treatmen… Show more

“…Piaia et al (2017) recorded the predominance of pioneer herbaceous species with greater representation of the Poaceae, Asteraceae and Solanaceae families in soil seed bank fragments from seasonal forests and stabilized gullet. Similar results were reported byDeiss et al (2018) regarding the Eucalyptus dunnii Maiden plantation. The species F.dichotoma, C. hirta, C. prostrata, C. mucunoides C. aestuans and H. communis were observed in all the SSB's evaluated environments, showing their great plasticity, that is,…”

“…The diversity and evenness of the seed bank was 1.485 and 0.42, respectively. These values were different from those obtained by Jakelaitis et al (2014), Mesquita et al (2016), Cardoso et al (2016) and Ferreira (2017), as well as the structural parameters also differed from those found in the consulted studies (Diniz et al, 2017;Ferreira, 2017;Corrêa et al, 2018;Carmona, 1995;Deiss et al, 2018;Mesquita et al, 2016).…”

“…The families Poaceae, Asteraceae and Amaranthaceae were also quite representative in other studies, such as those developed by Ferreira (2017), Deiss et al (2018) and Diniz et al (2017). Many species of these families exhibit characteristics which favor these results, such as the production of large quantities of seeds and the dispersion in different environments (Lorenzi, 2006;Holm et al, 1977;And Pedrotti Guarim-Neto, 1998).…”

“…Phytosociological indices are important for an analysis of the impact of soil management systems and agricultural practices on the dynamics of growth and occupation of weed communities in agroecosystems (Pitelli, 2000;Kuva et al, 2007;Deiss et al, 2017). They are also useful tools to shed light on the dynamics of weed species and their interactions in arable fields (Concenço et al, 2013).…”
