In the 2009/2010 growing season, Brazil was the second largest world soybean producer, followed by Argentina. Glyphosate-resistant soybeans (GRS) are being cultivated in most of the soybean area in South America. Overall, the GRS system is beneficial to the environment when compared to conventional soybean. GRS resulted in a significant shift toward no-tillage practices in Brazil and Argentina, but weed resistance may reduce this trend. Probably the highest agricultural risk in adopting GRS in Brazil and South America is related to weed resistance due to use of glyphosate. Weed species in GRS fields have shifted in Brazil to those that can more successfully withstand glyphosate or to those that avoid the time of its application. Five weed species, in order of importance, Conyza bonariensis (L.) Cronquist, Conyza canadensis (L.) Cronquist, Lolium multiflorum Lam., Digitaria insularis (L.) Mez ex Ekman, and Euphorbia heterophylla L., have evolved resistance to glyphosate in GRS in Brazil. Conyza spp. are the most difficult to control. A glyphosate-resistant biotype of Sorghum halepense L. has evolved in GRS in Argentina and one of D. insularis in Paraguay. The following actions are proposed to minimize weed resistance problem: (a) rotation of GRS with conventional soybeans in order to rotate herbicide modes of action; (b) avoidance of lower than recommended glyphosate rates; (c) keeping soil covered with a crop or legume at intercrop intervals; (d) keeping machinery free of weed seeds; and (d) use of a preplant nonselective herbicide plus residuals to eliminate early weed interference with the crop and to minimize escapes from later applications of glyphosate due to natural resistance of older weeds and/or incomplete glyphosate coverage.

Herbicides can cause negative effects on the morphophysiological characteristics of agricultural crops when proper knowledge about their selectivity is not available. For erva-mate plantations, herbicides which are registered and recommended are scarce. In this sense, this study was carried out to evaluate the selectivity of herbicides applied in different doses to erva-mate. The experiment was installed in a greenhouse at the Federal University of Fronteira Sul (UFFS), Campus Erechim, state of Rio Grande do Sul (RS), Brazil. The experimental design was a randomized block, arranged in a 7 × 4 factorial scheme, with four replications. Factor A comprised the herbicides (tembotrione, chlorimuron-ethyl, oxyfluorfen, sethoxydim + diclosulam, metsulfuron-methyl, Fomesafen + fluazifop-p-butyl and nicosulfuron) and factor B comprised the doses of these herbicides (0, 0.5, 1 and 2-fold the recommended dose for other crops, on the respective herbicide labels). The phytotoxicity, plant height, stem diameter, dry mass of shoots and roots, chlorophyll content, sub-stomatal CO 2 concentration, photosynthetic rate, CO 2 consumed, stomatal conductance of water vapors, transpiration rate, and water use efficiency were assessed. Oxyfluorfen, fomesafen + fluazifop-p-butyl and nicosulfuron affected the morphophysiological characteristics of erva-mate plants at all doses tested. The chlorimuron-ethyl and sethoxydim + diclosulam were presented as being potential to be used in erva-mate plantations until 2-fold the label dose, because they present low plant toxicity and reduced interference in the morphophysiological characteristics of erva-mate.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the selectivity of fluazifop-p-butyl and haloxyfop-R methyl ester on Eucalyptus urograndis (clone GG100), as well as the use of fluazifop-p-butyl for control of Panicum maximum and Urochloa brizantha. Two experiments were conducted in 15-liter capacity pots, in a completely randomized design with four replications. The first experiment consisted of seven treatments, in which fluazifop-p-butyl and haloxyfop-R methyl ester were sprayed at 15, 30 and 37 days after planting (DAP) and a control plot without application. In the second experiment, the treatments consisted of a factorial 4 × 2 (four application periods and two weed species), in which three seedlings of P. maximum or U. brizantha were transplanted per pot. In both experiments, at 90 DAP, plant height, stem diameter, leaf area and total dry matter of eucalyptus were evaluated. In the second experiment, besides the morphological parameters, the percentage of weed control was evaluated. The data was submitted to analysis of variance by F test, and the means compared by Tukey test at the level of 5% of probability. Both herbicides did not cause visual effects of phytointoxication in eucalyptus, but haloxyfop-R methyl ester was not selective to clone GG100 (E. urograndis). Fluazifop-p-butyl was selective to clone GG100, providing better control in the first application period (15 DAP) but only for P. maximum, which negatively affected the initial development of eucalyptus, while U. brizantha was not efficiently controlled with the usage of fluazifop-p-butyl.
