Prevalence and in vitro susceptibility of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus pseudintermedius (MRSP) from skin and nostrils of dogs with superficial pyoderma

Abstract: RESUMO.-[Prevalência e suscetibilidade in vitro deIn order to assess the prevalence of Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus pseudintermedius from skin and nostrils of dogs with pyoderma, to determine its in vitro susceptibility, and to correlate these data with the presence of the mecA gene, 43 dogs were selected. Samples were collected from secretion of their skin lesions and right nostril, cultured, and analyzed for phenotypic and genotypic characteristics of the bacteria studied. In 62 samples (91%) the mic… Show more

“…Our study showed that MRSP was detected at 28.30%, similar to Kadlec et al, who recorded 28% MRSP isolated from dogs admitted at a small animal hospital between July 2006 and April 2013 [ 7 ]. Moreover, the Department of Dermatology at the Veterinary Hospital of Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) indicated 29.55%, similar to a study at the Department of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Production, University of Naples (Naples, Italy) indicating 30.17% [ 23 , 24 ].…”

“…Oxacillin-resistant isolates of the SIG were detected in 4.5% of humans and 12.5% of dogs, indicative of methicillin-resistant S. pseudintermedius (MRSP). A wide range of MRSP prevalence rates have been reported in dogs, from as low as 2.6% in Norway [73], to as high as 34% in Brazil [74] and 40.5% in Canada [75]. The variations in the prevalence values may be due to the sites sampled as well as the methodology used to isolate the staphylococci and determine methicillin resistance.…”
