Stereological study of the elastic fiber and smooth muscle cell system in the bovine and buffalo penis

Abstract: Pesq. Vet. Bras. Show more

“…The collagen fibers were arranged circularly in superficial layer while were longitudinally oriented in the deeper layer of the tunica albuginea. These observations are in partial agreement with the findings of Ziehmer et al (2013) and Ribeiro et al (2013) who cited that smooth muscle fibers and large amount of elastic connective tissue occurred in the penis of Babirusa pigs and buffalo respectively.…”

“…The tunica albugenia consisted of numerous myelinated nerve fibers in bundles and arteries. These observations were also made by Babinski et al (2004) in wild boar, Kalita et al, (2015) in Zovawk, Ashdown and Gilanpour (1974) in bull, Ziehmer et al (2013) in Babirusa and Ribeiro et al (2013) in buffalo. The extent of the septum was very short as it disappeared immediately resulted in the formation of a single cavernous body at the body and tip of the penis.…”

“…The penis of rabbits is of musculocavernous type (Farag, Elsayed, & Shoeib, 2017), as the spaces filled with blood are relatively large and the septa separating them are delicate and muscular (Dyce, Sack, & Wensing, 2009; Hafez & Hafez, 2013; Ribeiro, Abidu‐Fig ueiredo, Costa, Pereira‐Sampaio, & Chagas, 2013). Furthermore, smooth muscles form the most abundant component of the penile erectile tissue.…”

“…In mammals with a fibroelastic penis (e.g. domestic cattle and pigs), the thick fibroelastic tissues exert pressure on the engorged vascular spaces and limit change in girth, resulting in rapid lengthening of the penis and straightening of the sigmoid flexure (Maia et al 2006;Ribeiro et al 2013). By contrast, in animals with a musculocavernous penis (e.g.…”
