Histochemical Studies on Penis of the Boar (Sus Scrofa Domesticus)

Abstract

The present investigation on gross, histological and histochemical features of boar penis was done on six male pig samples which were examined for gross details and processed for routine and special staining techniques such as H & E, Masson's Trichrome, Wilder's method, ALP, ACP, Oil red O, SDH and Shultz methods. Gross anatomical features revealed that penis of boar was cylindrical in shape with a root, body and tip which extended up to umbilicus. Body of the penis formed a 'S' shaped sigmoid flexure anterior to the scrotum and was round in the middle and flat at the tip. Retractor penis muscle was inserted to the body infront of sigmoid flexure. Glans was absent and spirally curved tip with small slit like external urethral orifice was seen ventro-laterally.
