ABSTRACT. The heavy traffic of machines in no-tillage systems causes problems as soil compaction and loss of crops productivity. The objective of this paper is to evaluate the productivity of soybeans in reference to furrow openers and the levels of soil compaction in two crops. The experiment was conducted on Rhodic Hapludox by tracing random blocks with subdivided parcels. The soil bulk density levels were laid out in the parcels (1.16, 1.20, 1.22, and 1.26 Mg m -3) and the furrowers in the sub-parcels (double disc and shanks). The resistance to penetration, depth of the furrow, mobilized soil area, final plant stands, height of plants, mean number of beans by pod, 1,000 bean mass, number of pods per plant and productivity of the culture were evaluated. The resistance to penetration increased with the levels of soil compaction regardless of the farming year and up to a depth of 0.20 m. In the first crop, higher productivity with the use of the shank was observed. In the second crop, the use of the shank resulted in an increase in depth of the furrow, mobilized soil, height of the plants and final stand of the plants, but this did not indicate an increase in productivity.

However, Modolo et al (2013) described a 42% increase in the soil area mobilized by the sowing furrow of the furrow opener with the shank mechanism in relation to the double disc. According to the authors, this was attributable to the greater depth at which the shank tine works and it's characteristic of breaking up layers of denser soil while the double disk furrow opener mechanism aims to open the sowing furrow with minimal soil mobilization.…”

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of seed-furrow openers and soil compaction on parameters such as sowing quality and root growth of soybean. The experiment was conducted using a randomized blocks experimental design with split plots, with the plots arranged by compaction level (1.16, 1.20, 1.22 and 1.26 Mg m -3 ) and the subplots by type of furrow opener (double disk and shank type). Root growth was assessed at three depths (0.00-0.10; 0.10-0.20 and 0.20-0.30 m) in the sowing line and interrow. The sowing quality data means were compared using the Tukey test (p≤0.05), while the root growth data means were compared using the LSD test (p≤0.05). Penetration resistance increased with increasing soil compaction to a depth of 0.20 m. The sowing depth and mobilized soil area were not affected by soil compaction levels. The type of furrow opening mechanism only influenced the sowing depth, with greater depth achieved using the double disc. Neither the seedfurrow openers nor the level of soil compaction significantly influenced soybean root growth when evaluated in the sowing line. The type of furrow opening mechanism did not influence any of the evaluated parameters. Soil compaction altered soybean root growth in the interrow, but did not impede rooting. Regardless of the assessment depth in the interrow, there was a reduction in root volume, length, surface area and diameter with increased soil density.

Commercial integrated crop-livestock systems achieve comparable crop yields to specialized production systems: A meta-analysis

Production systems that feature temporal and spatial integration of crop and livestock enterprises, also known as integrated crop-livestock systems (ICLS), have the potential to intensify production on cultivated lands and foster resilience to the effects of climate change without proportional increases in environmental impacts. Yet, crop production outcomes following livestock grazing across environments and management scenarios remain uncertain and a potential barrier to adoption, as producers worry about the effects of livestock activity on the agronomic quality of their land. To determine likely production outcomes across ICLS and to identify the most important moderating variables governing those outcomes, we performed a meta-analysis of 66 studies comparing crop yields in ICLS to yields in unintegrated controls across 3 continents, 12 crops, and 4 livestock species. We found that annual cash crops in ICLS averaged similar yields (-7% to +2%) to crops in comparable unintegrated systems. The exception was dual-purpose crops (crops managed simultaneously for grazing and grain production), which yielded 20% less on average than single-purpose crops in the studies examined. When dual-purpose cropping systems were excluded from the analysis, crops in ICLS yielded more than in unintegrated systems in loamy soils and achieved equal yields in most other settings, suggesting that areas of intermediate soil texture may represent a "sweet-spot" for ICLS implementation. This meta-analysis represents the first quantitative synthesis of the crop production outcomes of ICLS and demonstrates the need for further investigation into the conditions and management scenarios under which ICLS can be successfully implemented.
