Anaerobic co-digestion of crude glycerin and starch industry effluent

Abstract: The Brazil's Biodiesel Production and Use Program introduces biodiesel in the Brazilian energy matrix, bringing along the perspective of a growth of the glycerin offer, co-product generated in the proportion of 10 kg for each 100 L of biodiesel. The aim of this study was to evaluate the addition of crude glycerin in the anaerobic digestion of cassava starch industry effluent (cassava wastewater), in a horizontal semi-continuous flow reactor of one phase in laboratory scale. It was used a reactor with a 8.77 L … Show more

“…Nuchdang and Phalakornkule (2012) registered that the efficiency of COD removal was rather stable, remaining above 80%, in the sample analyzed with glycerin associated with pig manure (80% glycerin and 20% of pig manure). Larsen et al (2013) ) proportion in the reactor (Larsen et al, 2013).…”

“…Treatments with glycerin had lower ST reduction when compared to control (0% Gly) perhaps due to the viscous characteristic of the effluent from the cassava industry. In fact, the mere addition of 3% glycerin (m m -1 ) caused the clogging of the laboratory scale reactor feed system (Larsen et al 2013).…”

“…In a co-digestion study of cassava wastewater with crude glycerin, Larsen et al (2013) achieved higher reductions of VS with temperature set at 26 °C and HRT of 4 and 5 days. The authors obtained reductions from 90.2 to 61.5% of VS with decrease in the process efficiency as glycerin doses increased, similar to that observed in our study with 5% crude glycerin addition.…”

“…Biodiesel is converted through transesterification reaction whereby crude glycerin is generated in approximately 10%. In addition, crude glycerin contains some impurities in its composition, such as water, methanol, and non-glycerol organic material, which gives it a low commercial value (Larsen et al, 2013).…”

“…The anaerobic co-digestion of the poultry hatchery and wastewater ensure the production of renewable energy, given the degradation performed by the microorganisms (Larsen et al, 2013;Lijó et al, 2014), although studies on the process for obtaining renewable energy are still incipient.…”
