Behavior, performance and physiological parameters of pigs reared in deep bedding

Abstract: An experiment was conducted to evaluate the behavior, performance and physiological parameters of pigs in different production systems. Twenty four animals in the growth phase were distributed in a randomized block design in three treatments: T1 - concrete floor, T2 - deep bedding with wood shaving, and T3 - deep bedding with coffee husks. The behavioral study was carried out by observing the animal behavior for an uninterrupted period of eight hours throughout seven weeks. The proportions of time spent in eac… Show more

“…O crescimento nesse setor trouxe consigo a inserção de novas tecnologias genéticas, nutricionais, de manejo e saúde animal (CALDARA et al, 2012). Na criação destacase a inserção do sistema confinado, que aumenta a produtividade e diminui custos, mas por outro lado potencializa a geração de dejetos.…”

“…Thus, seeking to replace the physiological indicators by vocalization characteristics, as the techniques to obtain the physiological responses can often cause stress to the animals. Traits such as behavior, performance and physiological parameters (both rectal and surface temperatures, and respiratory rate) as indicators of the welfare status of pigs reared on a concrete floor bedded with coffee husks have been found in the current literature [ 23 ]. Differences in cortisol levels between the pigs submitted to the pre-slaughter and stunning stress and those ones that were not exposed to this condition was reported, suggesting that cortisol level might be also used as welfare status indicator [ 24 ].…”

“…The differences in baseline body temperature may be explained by differences in circadian rhythms. Caldara et al [57] reported that body temperature from the neck; shoulders and leg were similar in pigs kept between compact floor, wood shavings and coffee husk. The rectal temperature was, however, higher in pigs enriched with coffee husks as compared to wood shavings and compact floor.…”

“…Therefore, more research still needs to be done looking at how the environment instigates these changes in the balance of the autonomic nervous system in pigs. Caldara et al [57] studied the effect of rearing pigs in deep bedding, coffee husks and compact floor and found that the respiratory rate did not differ between treatments. The respiratory rate was, however, above the threshold range considered normal for the species at this stage of rearing.…”
